More Weekend Madness

gbh weekend

Brace yourselves – the weekend just got bigger. As you may know, A-Trak is taking over Webster Hall on Friday night with Treasure Fingers and Theophilus London. It’s $1 admission and $1 drinks until midnight if you RSVP, so there’s no excuse to miss this massive event. It goes without saying that A-Trak is going to kill it, what we’re really looking forward to is seeing Theophilus London perform. His debut mixtape, “This Charming Mixtape” showcases a wide range of musical styles and is definitely worth a listen.

On Saturday night, XXXChange will be spinning at the Tribeca Grand Hotel. His remix of Santigold’s “LES Artistes” is one of the best remixes on the Top Ranking mixtape, so we’re curious to see how he fares on the decks. It’s a free event, just make sure you RSVP.

Countdown to All Points West: Seasick Steve

Last night, Seasick Steve whet our appetites with an intimate performance at Mercury Lounge. After seeing Green Day perform with full-on pyrotechnics the night before at Madison Square Garden, it was a nice change of pace to see Seasick Steve’s pared down one-man show.

He greeted the audience with handshakes before taking the stage for a little over an hour. Between songs, he shared anecdotes about everything from his childhood to chiggers, occasionally taking swigs from a bottle of red wine. He often referred to his raw sound as “Mississippi disco”, evident by his three string trance wonder guitar which he calls the “biggest piece of shit in the world, I swear”. There was a unique tenderness among the gruff swagger, particularly when he called a young lady on stage and sang the soft love song, “Walkin’ Man.

Seasick Steve will be performing on the Blue Comet stage at 2:20 tomorrow, so make sure you get there early so you don’t miss out. Follow us on Twitter to get live updates from the festival.

Mishka Delivers Major Lazer B-Sides

It’s no surprise that Mishka NYC, the Brooklyn-based fashion label, enlisted Major Lazer for their tenth volume Keep Watch mixtape series. The brand’s identity is strongly influenced by the freshest rhythms around, and the Diplo/Switch collaboration is no exception. Sure we’ve raved about these guys plenty but this mix delivers a few unheard tracks and b-sides. You’ll recognize a few cuts from their most recent Essential Mix, and we also confirm that Switch has quite the thing for Ace of Base. Be sure to listen out for some M.I.A. action as well.

Countdown to All Points West: The Ting Tings

This Saturday at All Points West will mark the fourth time that we’ve seen The Ting Tings perform live in the past year. They put on a great show and are tons of fun to watch. My one complaint? Lead singer Katie White has worn the same shirt at all three shows. Will this Saturday bring a much-needed costume change? I guess we’ll have to wait and see…

Check out LA Riots‘ remix of “That’s Not My Name” below. Speaking of LA Riots, click here for photos from their recent DJ set at Webster Hall by Kenroy George.

The Real Sliim Shady

Say what you want about Perez Hilton, but the man’s got good taste in music. This week, he introduced Sliimy, the first artist signed to his record label, Perezcious Records. It’s easy to draw comparisons between Sliimy and Mika (another Perez favorite) – they both sport a mop of curls, a quirky look and sing in falsetto – but Sliimy’s sound is definitely distinct. While Mika’s leans more towards electro-pop, Sliimy’s pop sound incorporates acoustic guitar, ska beats and has the potential to appeal to all ages.

Sliimy initially made waves last December with his cover of Britney Spears’ “Womanizer”. He is currently on tour in Europe, and his album is scheduled for a September 14 release.

Check out his video for “Wake Up” below.  Anyone else hear some Lily Allen in there?

Countdown to All Points West: Flying Lotus

On Friday night, MeanRed Productions hosted NYC Sub-Session, an event for applicants to the Red Bull Music Academy in London. Both informative and entertaining, the event featured live interviews with DJ Harvey, Gary Stewart and 88 Keys, and music by DJ Kingdom.

The featured surprise guest, Flying Lotus, was a great choice – his unique musical style and insights into the industry are the makings of an artist that will be around for years to come.

All Points West Reveals Set Times

With three stages and over 65 artists, tough decisions lie ahead for All Points West concertgoers. MGMT or Coldplay? Flying Lotus or the Yeah Yeah Yeahs? Artist overlap is inevitable in a production of this magnitude, but the schedule is well staggered so that you can still catch a partial set before heading to another stage. Set times for Saturday and Sunday are posted after the jump, or visit the All Points West website for printable versions.

Don’t forget, we’re giving away a pair of 3-day passes to the festival. Click here to enter… contest ends on Monday at noon.

BBC’s Essential Mix: Major Lazer

This weekend’s Essential Mix features two of the world’s top producers, Diplo & Switch as Major Lazer. They just released their debut album Guns Don’t Kill People, Lazers Do and have embraked on a global dancehall zombie war. Be prepared for 120 minutes of a dubby, dance rhythm infestation.
