Beck the DJ

Given Beck’s culture collage of musical styles, it comes as no surprise that he’s begun a weekly DJ set entitled Planned Obsolescence. Beck describes the project as, “…mixes of what we’re listening to, put together by myself or guest DJs.”

The inaugural edition, “Autobahn Hologram”, draws from a somewhat lo-fi obscurity which is exactly what you would expect from the eclecticism of Beck. His own depiction of the mix is, “a laminated miasma colliding on the bavarian trans expressway with american analog and voicemail emeritus… alabama nukes, rhineland jukes, pony tailed arch dukes, and the anatomically correct scapegoat…”
Full stream of the mix after the jump…

The mix starts off with a couple of minutes of Pharoah Sanders’ riot “Red, Black & Green”. Kraftwerk’s “Autobahn” also makes an appearance, as does Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark’s cover of the Velvet Underground’s “Waiting for the Man”, a song that Beck himself just covered as part of Record Club.

He also mixes in some unexpected selections from Michael Jackson , the Pink Mountaintops, and Lee “Scratch” Perry’s Upsetters.

The latest mix can be found here.
