Weekend Madness: Modeselektor, Basement Jaxx and More…

We hope you’ve recovered from Halloween, because this weekend is brimming with parties you don’t want to miss…

On Friday, the Guggenheim Museum is hosting their monthly Art After Dark party, which pairs the musical stylings of Holy Ghost! with the art of Kandinsky. The party only goes from 9 PM-1 AM, so with proper planning and motivation, you can continue your night at Webster Hall, where Girls & Boys is jumping off with Jazzy Jeff and Viking . We last saw Jazzy Jeff at the Bacardi B-Live party at M2 in June, where he hit the spot with an eclectic set that included well-chosen hip-hop favorites.

If you’re more into the house scene, Sasha is heading up the bill at Blk|Market Membership’s epic 14-hour party. The Brooklyn location is kept under wraps, but you can get in on the action if you RSVP.

Saturday brings about a tougher decision, with two heavy hitting european duos going head to head. Read more about Modeselektor, Basement Jaxx, and your other Saturday night options after the jump…

Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary, collectively known as Modeselektor, will play the final show of their eight-city North American tour at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. Modeselektor first entered our radar in 2007 when Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke included “Silikon” on his featured iTunes playlist. It’s no secret that Thom Yorke is a huge supporter; not only have they shared a concert bill and worked together on numerous occasions (Yorke was featured on the Modeselektor track, “The White Flash”, while Modeselektor remixed Yorke’s solo track, “Skip Divided”), Yorke was also spotted wearing a Modeselektor T-shirt while performing at Lollapalooza in 2008.

Modeselektor draws influence from so many genres – electro, hip-hop, techno, even reggae – there’s bound to be something for everyone. “For us it has never been appealing to dedicate ourselves to one specific genre,” the duo has said when asked to classify their style, “Music is music.” While their catalog is diverse, there is still a common thread that ties their music together, a certain je ne sais quoi that makes a song unmistakably “Modeselektor”. Needless to say, you know who we’ll be checking out this Saturday.

Meanwhile, at Santos Party House, Fixed is busting out the big guns to help celebrate their five-year anniversary with a DJ set by Basement Jaxx. If their fifth studio album, Scars, is any indication, we can expect a refreshingly diverse set from the South London Duo.

Le Royale, which was temporarily shut down last summer and reincarnated as Brooklyn’s N8, will reopen its Manhattan location this weekend with a special dubstep event, featuring music by The Chainsmokers and Mark Potter. It’s a free event if you RSVP.

Also on Saturday, Japanese foursome The Suzan will take the stage at the Tribeca Grand Hotel for a live performance. Discovered by Björn Yttling of Peter Bjorn and John (who also discovered Lykke Li), and signed to Fool’s Gold Records, The Suzan are backed by two solid entities who have proven to have impeccable taste in music.
