Music Monday Vol. 1: Delorean, Crystal Castles, Gogol Bordello and More

This HiFi Cartel’s very own Music Monday. While our weekly music picks may not always be up-to-the-minute “brand new,” it’s what we’re into at the moment. This week’s selections bring a taste of global music, with albums by Dorean (non traditionally Basque), New York Pony Club (British), Alcoholic Faith Mission (Danish), Gogol Bordello (New York), Balkan Beat Box (New York), and Crystal Castles (Ontarian).

DeloreanSubiza

The latest album from Spanish four-piece Delorean is a a refreshing listen that unravels within raves of their colorful melodies. Subiza is the Barcelona-based band’s third effort, named after the Basque island where it was recorded. The album resonates with tracks of mood swinging beats that play on combination of dance and indie-pop rhythms. The track “Stay Close” has the feel of an instant summer hit. The LP/CD will be available June 8th but the album is avialable on iTunes.

New Young Pony ClubThe Optimist

The second album from the UK new wave punk band,  New York Pony Club, takes on a darker tone than its title, The Optimist, may suggest. The heavy synth and base driven riffs are accentuated by the vocals of the group’s lead singer Tahita Bulmer – adding to the rhythmic levels fit for simple head bops and dancing alike.

Alcoholic Faith MissionLet This Be the Last Night We Care

Easy listening and tranquil, this is the third album by the Danish band. Emotionally somber, it emits a dreamy synth-driven post-modern rock meshed with pop-folk to yield a collective flair of airiness within their compositions. The album is available now. The group will play at Death By Audio in Brooklyn this Tuesday, May 4th.

Gogol BordelloTrans-Continental Hustle

While we’re on gypsy rock, this band certainly doesn’t need an introduction. After earning a reputation as one of the best live acts in New York City, Gogol Bordello, the multinational gypsy-punk rockers have teamed up with music powerhouse Rick Rubin for their latest album, their first under a major record label (Sony). Featuring violins, accordions, heavily strummed double guitars with the distinct, rough, and unique voice of Ukrainian American singer Eugene Hutz, the album is a convulsion of fine tunes. Filled with so many strong words and in accordance to the album’s title, several of songs commentate on immigration and homogenization by the lead singer, Hutz, who migrated to United States in his teenage years. The album is available now.

Gogol Bordello – “Pala Tute”

Balkan Beat BoxBlue Eyed Black Boy

Founded by an ex-Gogol Bordello member, Balkan Beat Box, the New York-based duo releases their third LP of internationally influenced electronica/rock. The album is a play on the Balkan gypsy – taking traditional sounds and instruments to interesting and engaging levels. The album is a morphing hybrid of dance, Balkan and Mediterranean brass infused with hip-hop, dancehall and touches of cumbia.

Crystal CastlesCrystal Castles (II)

The second eponymous album from the experimental electronic duo packs a punch of entertainment. The album relies on synth heavy pop meshed with melodies that tether along endearing to sudden sporadic changes. The group finds a great balance that makes the album enjoyable and as surprising as their first album, also titled Crystal Castles. The album is available digitally, hard copies go on sale May 24th.

Crystal Castles – “Celestica”

Take these tracks like the heat, and enjoy it. Also, check out the videos below from Delorean (“Stay Close”), New Young Pony Club (“Chaos”), and the Balkan Beat Box (“War Again”)
