Music Monday Vol. 2: We Have Band, Holy Fuck, Rusko and more
Richie Adomako / May 10, 2010
This week’s installment of Music Monday brings us artists that are providing a movement for their genre as well as experimenting with their sounds and music. This edition features flavors from We Have Band (Electro, Pop, Rock), Holy Fuck (Experimental Rock), Rusko (Dub, Electro), The New Pornographers (Indie Rock), The Joy Formidable (Indie Rock), and Uffie (Electro, Pop, Dance). Click through for reviews and samples of each album.
We Have Band – WHB
This fresh group is undeniably my favorite new band. With the help of Grizzly Bear and Interpol producer Gareth Jones, the debut effort from the young and prolific trio is reminiscent of the 80’s but has more than earned the buzz they’ve garnered. Altogether, WHB is a great and surprising listen – especially for a freshman effort.
We Have Band – “Honeytrap”
Holy Fuck – Latin
The second effort from this eclectic band will be released tomorrow from XL Recordings, the same house behind Vampire Weekend and The xx. This album is the band at its best – it highlights their raw style and concept of electronic music mixed with rock. Come back tomorrow for our feature and interview with the group.
Holy Fuck – “Latin America”
RUSKO – OMG
Rusko is on fire and his beats are simply wild. Setting speakers ablaze with his warping effects, he’s got us running in circles of joy. Rusko’s first full length album, OMG highlights the set of skills that the DJ/producer has honed during his sessions, on tour, and amidst his numerous remixes and collaborations. If dubstep is at its moment, then consider this a masterpiece from one of its shining stars. The album also features Amber Coffman of the Dirty Projectors, Crookers and Gucci Mane.
Rusko – “Hold On” featuring Amber Coffman
New Pornographers – Together
The latest LP from the Canadian indie group features guest appearances by St. Vincent and members of Beirut, Okkervil River and the Dap-Kings. In their fifth effort, the New Pornographers create a cohesive album of easy listening that is gracefully executed. The end result is a satisfying blend of instrumentals and vocals that drive a colorful album fit for many moods.
The New Pornographers – “Your Hands (Together)”
The Joy Formidable – A Balloon Called Moaning
We caught the UK band on their first visit to New York City back in January. After positive reactions on tour, A Balloon Called Moaning has been re-released with good reason. Their syncopated style draws on guitar riffs and pleasant melodies that make this album an enjoyable listen. They are the first band to sign onto Black Bell Records under Ayad Al Adhamy of Passion Pit.
The Joy Formidable - “Austere”
Bonus: Uffie – “ADD SUV” featuring Pharrell Williams
“ADD SUV” is the new single from Uffie’s upcoming album, Sex Dreams and Denim Jeans. An EP of “ADD SUV”, including remixes by Armand Van Helden and Hudson Mohawke, will be released May 24.
