On Saturday night we made our way to 88 Palace, the dim sum restaurant-turned-nightclub under the Manhattan Bridge in Chinatown for a jam-packed night of dancing. The second New York City installment of the LA-based “Dance Right” party, presented by MFG and Meanred Productions, featured DJ sets by Holy Ghost!, Classixx and Punches!, along with a live performance by Jessica 6.
Punches! (Darin and Greg Bresnitz, the dynamic twins behind the show “Dinner with the Band”) started the night with an electro-disco DJ set of classics like Jackie Wilson’s “Higher and Higher”, warming up the audience for the post-punk/electro-funk stylings of Jessica 6. Another Brooklyn-based band led by sexy songstress Nomi Ruiz (from Hercules and Love Affair), Jessica 6 put on a solid performance that rallied the packed house. Next up, Holy Ghost!, yet another duo from Brooklyn, brought the spiritual essence of dance music with a DJ set that included their remix of LCD Soundsystem’s “Drunk Girls” and their single “Hold On”. Nick Millhiser and Alex Frankel did a splendid job on setting the environment and preparing the audience for the Los Angeles-based DJ duo Classixx. With a diverse selection of grooves that started with “Drop” by Cornelius, Classixx closed out the night with some of their own tracks, including “I’ll Get You” featuring Jeppe. Michael David and Tyler Blake are a great representation of what it means to work together as a team. Seamlessly, they’ve got their rhythm and vibe down, and between track selection and mixing at the decks, their talent is admirable. Classixx is a duo that exemplifies the experience of refined musical selections and renditions that go hand-in-hand with the dance floor. On this night, we think everyone got the memo and certainly took the party’s name, “Dance Right”, to heed.
