Barbra Streisand.

This week, Duck Sauce (A-Trak x Armand Van Helden) released the music video for “Barbra Streisand”, their highly anticipated second single that has been heating up dance floors all summer. Director So Me (Ed Banger Records) does a great job of organically capturing New York City’s essence and joie de vivre, with cameo after cameo by pretty much everyone… we’d list them, but we think it’s more fun for you to find them yourselves.

“Barbra Streisand” will be released on October 12… in the meantime, click through to watch the video.

LuckyMe Does NYC

This Friday, September 24, our lovely friends over at Good Peoples present a one-off party from one of the hottest UK labels LuckyMe, based out of Glasgow, Scotland. This is an event so legendary it is only fitting that it take place in our very own Chinatown mini-mall turned rave hub, otherwise known as 88 Palace.

LuckyMe started in the summer of 2007 as a pipe dream to run a hip-hop group in a place that wasn’t on the map for hip-hop at the time. They went to the best clubs in the vicinity and thereby got caught up in other music whether it was underground dance music, techno, jazz, pop or rock. They ran parties in and around the Glasgow School of Art and Stereo. Simply put, they weren’t trying to do something innovative and different, but were just doing their thing. In July 2007 they started the label, artist collective and website as it exists today.

Since then, LuckyMe has become one of the world’s leading young crews, fusing hip-hop and new electronic club music. Us New Yorkers are lucky enough to have the crew cruise through our city this weekend for a rare event featuring their A-list starting line-up of Hudson Mohawke and Rustie who will be spinning back to back with support from Mike Slott, The Blessings and some of the most exciting new producers and DJs traveling in from around the world: Lunice, Jacques Greene, Eclair Fifi, Machinedrum, Cubic Zirconia, and Azelia Banks. In short, you’ll be kicking yourself for months to come if you dare to skip this awesome influx of European talent, so start plotting your route into the heart of Chinatown and beat bliss today.

A limited number of $10 advanced tickets can be purchased HERE, after which the price rises to $15. We also have two tickets to give away to one lucky winner; just fill out the form below to enter!

Trouble & Bass Turns 4 at Le Poisson Rouge

As we walked down Bleecker towards Le Poisson Rouge Saturday night, there was no doubt that the event we were approaching was something epic, as torrents of fans itching to get high on bass music poured towards the doors and waited for their chance to gain access to the mecca of heavy bass awaiting below. A wall of heat and heavy sub-bass slammed into our senses as we walked down the stairs and into the darkened cave that Le Poisson Rouge had morphed into. Sweat dipped down every back as heaving bodies quite literally slammed into each other in a fit of Trouble & Bass ecstasy, with the whole crew reunited after their respective touring this summer.

The Trouble & Bass gang (Drop the Lime, AC Slater, Star Eyes, and The Captain) brought their usual stellar sets with an array of bass music, kicking it up to an even higher degree of excellence for the festive occassion. A plethora of classic dupstep tunes that we’re used to anticipating from a Trouble & Bass set, with the crowd completely losing their minds such tracks as Little Jinder’s “Youth Blood”. Even the now infamous saxephone player from Drop the Lime’s “Sex Sax” video made an appearance, trenchcoat, hat and all.

Special guests Bart B More and Plastician respectively took the reigns during the peak hours of the party, dropping massive sets brimming with some seriously wobbly basslines dropped at the precisely perfect moment. But then, we’ve some to expect nothing less than awesome from the incredible roster of talent that the Trouble & Bass crew always manages to bring to our fair city. We can’t wait to see what dubstep chaos they’ll surprise us with in the colder months to come, as there’s nothing like a little sub-bass to ward off the winter chill.

Check out the full gallery from the night of sweaty bass driven madness HERE.

Five Questions with Riva Starr

Last Thursday, thanks once again to Robpromotions and Benny Soto, one of the UK’s premier house DJs Riva Starr rocked Cielo’s Funktion One sound system at Dance.Here.Now., taking the enthusiastic crowd on a journey through with his ecletic mixture of beats that still stay grounded in house and techno. He had no trouble at all keeping the crowd up and moving although the hour grew late, with help from New Yorkers JDH & Dave P who kicked off the night with their set of disco and funky tinged house music.

Riva Starr was also gracious enough to answer a couple of our questions for us. Click through to find out what the talented and hardworking artist is up to, and check out the full photo gallery from the Cielo event HERE.

The HiFi Cartel Proudly Presents sub:culture

A subculture is understood as a group of people with a culture, distinct or hidden, which differentiates them from the larger culture to which they belong. Subcultures can be distinctive because of the age, ethnicity, class, location, and/or gender of the members. For The HiFi Cartel, our subculture is that of an unwavering and impassioned dedication to music – and to sub bass. We believe in music that you can feel in your very being, music that makes you forget all about the worries of the day and the pressures of responsibility, music that makes you move without caring that anyone else is watching. We do not care about the label on your jacket, where you went to school or how much money you have in your bank account, for we serve only the rhythm, the beat, and the sub-bass frequencies which do not discriminate or pass judgment. Every subculture needs its arena, every sub-bass its system, and with that in mind, we are delighted to announce that on Thursday, September 23, 2010, The HiFi Cartel will bring you the premiere edition of sub:culture, our own celebration of musical innovation and inspiration, at Le Poisson Rouge.

Click through to learn more about the amazing artists on the roster for the evening and to preview some of their music. Advanced tickets to the event can be purchased HERE, or you can RSVP HERE for reduced admission. All RSVPs will be automatically entered to win a free pair of tickets.

A Collaboration of Epic Proportions: Chilly Gonzales’ Ivory Tower

After a summer of anticipation (and an iPad commercial, to boot), we finally got our hands on Chilly Gonzales’ Ivory Tower. Produced by electro heavyweight Boys Noize, Ivory Tower is hands-down one of the most unique and original albums I’ve ever heard. A classically-trained Pianist, Gonzales is no stranger to the world of collaboration, having worked with Peaches, Jamie Lidell, and Feist. Though the two artists come from opposite ends of the musical spectrum, the convergence of their distinct styles has resulted in a truly epic album.

And it doesn’t stop there. Ivory Tower is also the title of the accompanying film directed by Adam Traynor and starring Gonzales, Tiga and Peaches. For a preview of the film, watch the music video for “I Am Europe” below, and be sure to check out the sneak preview (and only scheduled NYC showing) of Ivory Tower at the Galapagos Art Space in Brooklyn on September 21, during which Gonzales will perform a 30-minute solo show [tickets].
