SXSW Announces Initial Line-Up

sxsw09

After taking on CMJ, The Electric Zoo, Street Scene, All Points West, and the Winter Music Conference in 2009, it seems only natural to add South by Southwest to our growing itinerary for 2010.

Last year, the festival drew 12,000 participants and showcased nearly 2,000 musical acts on 88 stages. The 2009 line-up included AC Slater, Amanda Blank, Buraka Som Sistema, Deadmau5, The Golden Filter, Grizzly Bear, Ben Harper & Relentless7, Jack Beats, MSTRKRFT and The Twelves, among others.

Now in its 24th year, the annual SXSW Music Conference and Festival will be held in Austin from March 17-21. The initial line-up of 450+ artists is likely to quadruple by March, and already includes Treasure Fingers, Kidz in the Hall, HEARTSREVOLUTION, Team Facelift, Adam Tensta and The Postelles. Chauffeur is also rumored to make a rare appearance at the festival, but is yet to be confirmed.

Music badges cost $675 if you register by January 12, and will allow you to participate in all of the official SXSW music parties, panels, and courses. Click here for a full list of badge levels, rates and details about the programs that the badges include. While the price tag might seem a little steep, it includes five full days of music with nearly 2,000 acts (which, if you do the math, breaks down to less than five cents per artist).

Don’t forget, the Winter Music Conference kicks off the following week in Miami (March 23-27), so plan accordingly. But more on that later…

More CMJ Madness: Shanghai’d and The Fort

We just got wind of a couple more parties you might want to check out this week…

Our friends at MeanRed are taking over 88 Palace this week with their Shanghai’d event series. Tonight is the Fool’s Showcase, featuring Kingdom and Sammy Bananas, with live performances by Vega and Donnis. Fool’s Gold founders A-Trak and Nick Catchdubs will be around to host the festivities. On Thursday, the Noise Problem Showcase features Designer Drugs, Lauren Flax, and NROTB; on Friday, Adam Tensta, VDRK and Free Magic are on the roster for MeanRed’s own showcase. As an added bonus, they’ll be passing around dim sum dishes throughout each night. Click here for the full line-ups and to RSVP.

If you’re looking for some daytime action on Saturday, Levi’s and The Fader have you covered. With continuous music from 2-10 PM, The Ace Hotel is the place to be on Saturday. We’re particularly looking forward to Chauffeur’s performance, which will feature Mark Ronson, Theophilus London and Sam Sparrow. Flashing Lights founders Nick Catchdubs and Jubilee will also be spinning at the event. Click here to RSVP.

Live from New York… it’s CMJ!

CMJ

We just caught a glimpse of the initial line-up for CMJ’s annual Music Marathon, and our heads are still spinning. The marathon, which takes place from October 20-24 in NYC, features up and coming artists in venues all over the city.

Last year, we went to a few shows during the marathon, including The Cool Kids, Crystal Castles and the Fool’s Gold Showcase. This year’s long list of artists – with hundreds more to be announced – includes Adam Tensta, Fool’s Gold, Hank and Cupcakes, Mickey Factz, Tommie Sunshine and Z-Trip. Kosha Dillz and Adam Deitch, who both made cameos during Matisyahu’s July concert in NYC, are also on the roster.

The registration badge gives you access to all CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival events, including the concerts (on a space-available basis) and over 60 panel discussions centering on the music industry. Tickets are also available to individual concerts. For more information or to register, visit the official website.

Around the World with Girls & Boys

Sneaky Sound System

On Friday night, the boys at GBH treated us to an international line-up, featuring live performances by Sneaky Sound System and Adam Tensta. Busy P joined DJ Daruma for a surprise set.

We caught a preview of Swedish hip-hop MC Adam Tensta at our event on Wednesday, but the full stage and atmosphere at Webster Hall allowed him to showcase his true ability. Fueled by the crowd’s energy, he performed six songs, which of course included My Cool.

Hailing from Tokyo, DJ Daruma took over the turntables, spinning a solid electro set. The audience buzzed with excitement when French DJ Busy P emerged for a few songs.

While Webster Hall was lacking a lot of their regulars, Australian band Sneaky Sound System was quite the draw. Their musical style fit in perfectly with the Friday audience, who sang along to their hits. Lead singer Miss Connie was sporting the ultimate accessory – a massive Chanel necklace fashioned out of Legos. Sneaky Sound System ended their hour-long set with UFO, and not since Crookers back in April have I seen the crowd go so wild.

We’ll be out of town next weekend, but if you’re around, be sure to check out Adam Freeland

The Great DJ

catchdubs_heckman

Last night, The HiFi Cartel stepped out with a preview event at Mr. West, featuring HiFi Contest Winner DJ M, Nick Catchdubs, Adam Tensta and DJ Price.

DJ M (a.k.a. Matt Heckman) proved himself worthy of your votes, putting his unique spin on old favorites. Highlights included mixes of Dance Dance Dance (Lykke Li), Use Somebody (Kings of Leon) and my personal favorite, M.I.A.’s Paper Planes mixed with Loser by Beck.

We’ve seen Nick Catchdubs spin all over the city, so it came as no surprise that his set was off the hook, flowing seamlessly between genres. His set ranged from remixed club tracks to Fool’s Gold favorites like A-Trak’s Say Woah and Shake it Down (with Laidback Luke).  We also loved his shout-out to Santigold, playing both Creator and a great remix of Shove It (for which we are still searching).

DJ Price teased with the Rusko remix of Pro Nails (Kid Sister) at the start of his predominately electro set. Adam Tensta hyped the crowd before taking the stage for a few songs, including his hit single, My Cool. Price manned the decks for the rest of the night, briefly joined by DJ M for a high-energy cameo.

Thank you to everyone who helped us with the event and showed their support.
