SXSW Announces Initial Line-Up

sxsw09

After taking on CMJ, The Electric Zoo, Street Scene, All Points West, and the Winter Music Conference in 2009, it seems only natural to add South by Southwest to our growing itinerary for 2010.

Last year, the festival drew 12,000 participants and showcased nearly 2,000 musical acts on 88 stages. The 2009 line-up included AC Slater, Amanda Blank, Buraka Som Sistema, Deadmau5, The Golden Filter, Grizzly Bear, Ben Harper & Relentless7, Jack Beats, MSTRKRFT and The Twelves, among others.

Now in its 24th year, the annual SXSW Music Conference and Festival will be held in Austin from March 17-21. The initial line-up of 450+ artists is likely to quadruple by March, and already includes Treasure Fingers, Kidz in the Hall, HEARTSREVOLUTION, Team Facelift, Adam Tensta and The Postelles. Chauffeur is also rumored to make a rare appearance at the festival, but is yet to be confirmed.

Music badges cost $675 if you register by January 12, and will allow you to participate in all of the official SXSW music parties, panels, and courses. Click here for a full list of badge levels, rates and details about the programs that the badges include. While the price tag might seem a little steep, it includes five full days of music with nearly 2,000 acts (which, if you do the math, breaks down to less than five cents per artist).

Don’t forget, the Winter Music Conference kicks off the following week in Miami (March 23-27), so plan accordingly. But more on that later…

Amanda Blank: I Love You

amanda-blank-i-love-you

Amanda Blank‘s recently-released debut album,  I Love You, features the Cool Kids, Lykke Li, and Santigold. You’ve probably heard Amanda’s single “Might Like You Better” where she exults “I might like you better if we slept together.” Amanda’s prowess on stage at the Siren Music Festival and on tour with Santigold made us look forward to her debut album. Like her performances, the album is provocative and comes just in time to add to the summer heat. If this is her call for our attention then she certainly deserves it. With a fast pace of club beats and mixes, glazed with enticing lyrics, Amanda Blank wants your love for this album, and well… there’s no way we could like her better. This CD is so bad (as in a good way) that it serves a spanking for a listen.

The album is currently available on imeem. Click here to check it out.

The Siren Music Festival Sounds the Alarm in Coney Island

Take a calm sunny Saturday, add a bit of breeze, throw in an amusement park with an eclectic lineup of live music and you’ve got the 2009 Siren Music Festival. With acts back to back on two stages, it was tough to pick which to catch. Our day started with Future of the Left and Grand Duchy, but the true heart thumping moments of the live performances certainly goes to the Raveonettes. Good music, vocals and instrumentals can send a chill down the spine, but when an artist hits the right note, you can almost feel it right in your chest. Several moments during their set, the crowd was not only appeased with the well-fashioned Raveonettes, but they listened as if struck with awe. With harmony and electro combined with a hollow beach sound, the Raveonettes merge noise and effects with guitars scratching to solid beats – all to the tune of a jarring step that creates a melody synchronous to fluid motion. Seeing them perform live takes their songs to the umpteenth level.

The Evolution of Santigold

IMG_011.jpg

Santigold’s sold-out concert at Terminal 5 last night marks my fifth (yes, fifth) Santigold show in the past year. If you want to get technical about it, she was still “Santogold” for the first two shows, but a lawsuit earlier this year forced her to change her stage name to “Santigold”.

The great thing about seeing Santigold perform multiple times is that she has stepped up her game considerably from show to show, going from hot new act to rockstar in just under a year. Last night’s show was by far her strongest, featuring a live band, guest appearances, and the best set list to date.
