The Summer Pool Parties Are Back in Full Force

Jelly has provided some very fond summer memories in the past, and will help NYC create a few more in the coming weeks. Beginning on July 11th with Xiu Xiu and Deerhoof, who will play Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures, the shows only get better for the next seven weeks. Delorean, Chromeo, Cut Copy, No Age, Telephoned, Memory Tapes and Murder City Devils are just a few set to jam on Brooklyn’s East River State Park every Sunday at 2. The best part? It’s all free!

Halloween Madness

Planning your Halloween can be quite daunting – with so many great events to choose from, where do you begin? Fear not, The HiFi Cartel is here to help you narrow down your options. We’ve already told you about Above & Beyond at Roseland Ballroom, Danny Tenaglia at Pacha and Paco Osuna at Love. Here are some of the other happenings you might want to check out:

We’ll be at the FIXED Halloween Bash at Santos Party House, where German DJ sensation Boys Noize will be gracing the speakers with his signature funky electro. Fixed’s own JDH and Dave P will also be spinning. Boys Noize recently dropped a BBC Essential Mix, which you can check out here to gear up for this weekend’s festivities.

Fool’s Gold and Trouble & Bass are teaming up for what is sure to an epic night at Europa in Brooklyn. Kingdom, XXXChange and Nick Catchdubs from Fool’s Gold will face off against the Trouble & Bass Crew, Supra 1 and 77 Klash. Make sure you RSVP for reduced admission at the door.

After passport issues forced The Very Best to cancel their CMJ appearances, they will surely redeem themselves with a live performance at the Gods and Heroes Party presented by FlavorPill and MeanRed. The party will be held at a secret Brooklyn location. Tickets are well worth the $35 price tag, considering they include an open bar all night. 100% of the proceeds will go to Charity: Water to help bring clean drinking water to a school in Ethiopia.

The Park is also hosting quite the soiree, with a line-up that’s too long to list in its entirety. Headlined by Paul Sevigny, the event will also feature music by The Chainsmokers and B-Roc. Get advance tickets here, and be sure to arrive early to capitalize on the open bar from 9:00 – 10:30 PM.

Finally, Girls & Boys residents Gavin Royce and Stephen Pandolfi (a.k.a. Kids with Snakes) will spin at Dokebi’s Fourth Annual Halloween Party in Brooklyn, which promises to be “an excellent dark and sweaty dance experience”. If you love music but are short on cash, this is a great option since there’s no cover. As an added bonus, they’ll be serving Tacos to help you keep your energy going all night long. In preparation for the revelry, be sure to check out the Futureshock Mix Tape that Gavin Royce and Stephen Pandolfi did for Nicky Digital.

Halloween can be pretty hectic, so we highly recommend that you get advance tickets where available. And if you’re looking to get the party started early, Webster Hall has you covered, with a DJ Set by Justice on Thursday (with Jackson and Disko Dali) and live performances by Simian Mobile Disco and Phenomenal Handclap Band on Friday.

Rest up – it’s going to be a long weekend.

Drumming for a Benefit – Adventures of Power

movie_adventures_of_power.jpg

After four years of hard work, Ari Gold (Hoyt Honey) of the Honey Brothers will finally debut his feature film, Adventures of Power, this Friday. This Wednesday (October 7), Variance Films will celebrate the US theatrical release with a party at the newly-opened Knitting Factory in Williamsburg. There is an optional $10 donation at the door to support the Bill Graham Memorial Foundation and their effort in providing music education to disadvantaged children.

Adventures of Power is about a character who never learned to play the drums because his father couldn’t afford a drum set. Power, the main character, embraces the next best thing: air drumming. This is Power’s story as he sets off on a musical journey across the country to join an underground air drumming crew in Newark.

Starring Ari Gold, DuContra, Jane Lynch, Michael McKean, Shoshannah Stern, Chiu Chi Ling, and Adrian Grenier, Adventures of Power has been met with critical acclaim and has won several awards, including “Official Selection” at the Sundance Film Festival and winning at the “Vail Film Festival, Indie Memphis Festival, and the San Antonio Film Festival,” among others.

This promises to be one hell of a party – we were even sworn to secrecy about some of the special guests and performances – so come support this independent film and the great cause that they have taken on.

October 7th at Knitting Factory in Brooklyn
8pm-3am, 18+

The Slew Rocks Brooklyn in One-Time Tour

theslew-brooklyn-hificartel

Last Wednesday, we caught The Slew on the Brooklyn stop of their one-time tour. The tour is a live presentation of their album, 100%, which has been four and a half years in the making.

Kid Koala and DJ P-Love’s expert turntabslisim was met with hard-hitting rhythms from Myles Heskett on drums and Chris Ross on bass and keys. Each DJ manned a set of turntables, with a third turntable mounted on a drum stand. All of the vocals came from the 80 custom records that Kid Koala cut for the tour.

They started the set with the album’s title track, “100%”, and went through almost the entire album in sequential order. Each member of the band clearly loves what they do, their passion and enthusiasm came across strongly throughout the set. In a great moment towards the end of the show, Kid Koala connected Chris Ross’ bass to his mixer to manipulate the sound.

If you haven’t already heard it, click here for a free download of The Slew’s 100%, and be sure to check out Oliver Correa’s photos of the show. Have a peek at the partial set list after the jump.

Countdown to Street Scene: Girl Talk

hificartel-girltalk-jelly

San Diego, you are in for one hell of a party. On Sunday evening, Girl Talk performed at Jelly’s penultimate Pool Party in Brooklyn to the largest crowd of the summer. Girl Talk has been known to invite the audience to join him on stage while he DJs, but this time, the stage was no match for the party that ensued. Girl Talk’s set came to an unexpected halt so that the crew could repair the stage, which started to buckle under the pressure of dancing fans. The diminished stage crowd didn’t deter Girl Talk from his usual high-energy antics as he continued his set.

Sunday was Girl Talk’s last show on the east coast, but you can catch him this Friday at Street Scene in San Diego. Click here to see pictures from Girl Talk’s show at Hiro Ballroom last May.

Mishka Delivers Major Lazer B-Sides

mishka_mix

It’s no surprise that Mishka NYC, the Brooklyn-based fashion label, enlisted Major Lazer for their tenth volume Keep Watch mixtape series. The brand’s identity is strongly influenced by the freshest rhythms around, and the Diplo/Switch collaboration is no exception. Sure we’ve raved about these guys plenty but this mix delivers a few unheard tracks and b-sides. You’ll recognize a few cuts from their most recent Essential Mix, and we also confirm that Switch has quite the thing for Ace of Base. Be sure to listen out for some M.I.A. action as well.

Free Bklyn Pool Parties Return with Grizzly Bear, Girl Talk, & Dirty Projectors

pparties_header

For eight consecutive Sundays in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, JELLY brings us dodge-ball throwing, basketball tossing, bass thumping pool parties… minus the pool. The last three summers, the empty McCarren Pool transformed into an infamous pit of live music mayhem. Now McCarren is about to reopen as an actual swimming pool, so this summer the slew of free shows has a new location at the East River State Park.

The festivities kick off July 12th with the indie-punk rockers Mission of Burma and continue through August 30th. Notables include sweaty laced laptop masher, Girl Talk, British floor-fillers, Simian Mobile Disco, & indie-rock up-and-comers, Dirty Projectors. Grizzly Bear, who Jonny Greenwood dubbed his favorite band, will close the summer jaunt with thier neo-psychedelic sound.

The Youth is Starting to Change: MGMT at Prospect Park

MGMT 7.1.09

On Wednesday night, MGMT (along with opening acts Kuroma and Suckers) played a homecoming concert at The Bandshell in Prospect Park. When I first saw them on October 30 at Webster Hall, I got the impression that they were timid rock stars, not yet comfortable with their impending stardom (although it might have been because their faces were obscured by gigantic mariachi hats). Eight months later, the band blossomed, particularly frontman Andrew VanWyngarden (above, right). His newfound dynamism had him moving around the stage, interacting with his band mates, and even talking to the audience.
