Drop The Lime to Debut Live Show

Next Wednesday, May 11, Trouble & Bass favorite Drop The Lime will debut his full live show at Music Hall of Williamsburg. As anybody familiar with Drop The Lime knows, his musical talent and personal swagger pretty much guarantees that his live show will be something that is not to be missed. Opening for DTL will be New York locals Cubic Zirconia who will be performing live, as well as Trouble & Bass DJs.

Drop The Lime has been honing his craft for years. From humble beginnings as a choirboy to a childhood obsession with 50s rock’n’roll, the New York local has been experimenting with sound for years via the underground electronic scene of Kid 606’s TigerBeat6 label, Mad Decent and French label Institubes (under his alter ego “Curses!”). Drop The Lime’s influences range from Brian Eno to rockabilly (he’s well known for his 50s doo wop and soul sets) to Sonic Youth to Wu Tang but things don’t just stop there. He has been running Trouble & Bass since 2006, and anyone who’s been to one of their parties knows that this crew is made up of the DJs who are defining a new New York sound.

2009 was a big year for Drop the Lime. He released two huge club hits, “Devils Eyes” and “Set Me Free”, the combined force of which helped him topple the likes of Phoenix, Florence & The Machine and The XX as “Most Blogged Artist on the Planet” (Hype Machine). Luca took his unique style of DJing around the globe, farther afield than ever before, crisscrossing North America many times as well Europe, China, Singapore and Australia. Drop The Lime has continued his quest to be one of the world’s leading DJ/producers, with a slew of singles including the mind blowing “Sex Sax”, which tore up dance floors around the globe and was remixed ferociously by the likes of Sinden and Bart B More to much support. As a follow up to “Sex Sax” came ”Hot As Hell”, a track that takes it’s inspiration from the 1950’s rock’n’roll and the rockabilly sound Drop The Lime grew up on. A real original sound that he is making his own, the conjunction of Rockabilly and dance music is innovation personified. His full length album “Enter the Night” will be released September 12 and has already been hailed by Mixmag as “a hellraising, rockabilly road trip.

LuckyMe Does NYC

This Friday, September 24, our lovely friends over at Good Peoples present a one-off party from one of the hottest UK labels LuckyMe, based out of Glasgow, Scotland. This is an event so legendary it is only fitting that it take place in our very own Chinatown mini-mall turned rave hub, otherwise known as 88 Palace.

LuckyMe started in the summer of 2007 as a pipe dream to run a hip-hop group in a place that wasn’t on the map for hip-hop at the time. They went to the best clubs in the vicinity and thereby got caught up in other music whether it was underground dance music, techno, jazz, pop or rock. They ran parties in and around the Glasgow School of Art and Stereo. Simply put, they weren’t trying to do something innovative and different, but were just doing their thing. In July 2007 they started the label, artist collective and website as it exists today.

Since then, LuckyMe has become one of the world’s leading young crews, fusing hip-hop and new electronic club music. Us New Yorkers are lucky enough to have the crew cruise through our city this weekend for a rare event featuring their A-list starting line-up of Hudson Mohawke and Rustie who will be spinning back to back with support from Mike Slott, The Blessings and some of the most exciting new producers and DJs traveling in from around the world: Lunice, Jacques Greene, Eclair Fifi, Machinedrum, Cubic Zirconia, and Azelia Banks. In short, you’ll be kicking yourself for months to come if you dare to skip this awesome influx of European talent, so start plotting your route into the heart of Chinatown and beat bliss today.

A limited number of $10 advanced tickets can be purchased HERE, after which the price rises to $15. We also have two tickets to give away to one lucky winner; just fill out the form below to enter!

Photo Gallery: Cubic Zirconia at The Dash Gallery (June 15, 2010)

As a New Yorker, I’m a sucker for art, fashionable people, an open bar, and good music. At the Dash Gallery last Tuesday, we found all four. Featuring art by Mark Roth, Julian Gilber and Innver City Avant Garde, and DJ sets from Bim Marx, Vin Sol, & One Auff to start the night, we couldn’t have been better prepared for the main event.

Celebrating the release of their new single and video for their track, “Black & Blue”, directed by Kahlil Joseph of Directors Bureau, New York’s Cubic Zirconia put on a live performance that heated up the Tribeca gallery space. They have great energy and are completely unpredictable. Words alone can’t describe the mesmerizing and unique experience, so go ahead and check out the photos from their electrifying performance and the moments leading up to it. Also, click through for the video of “Black & Blue”.

The Dash Gallery is hosting the 10th anniversary of The Bicycle Film Festival till June 20th from 6pm to 10pm.

Telephoned: Off the Hizzy

Meet Fool’s Gold’s latest signee, Telephoned, the brainchild of Maggie Horn and Fool’s Gold DJ/producer Sammy Bananas.  The 18-track “Off The Hook” Mixtape features a new spin on many songs that we already know and (in some cases) love.

The project’s tracks are neither remixes nor covers, rather a hybrid of both. Sammy Bananas expertly morphs the original beats into infectious tunes fit for the dance floor. Paired with Maggie Horn’s vocal stylings, each song on the mixtape brings a fresh take on the original track. The reggae-tinged “Dancin’ On Me” (Featuring Jahdan Blakkamoore) samples Enur’s Calabria and has a hint of dubstep, while “Million Dollar Bill” (originally by Whitney Houston) samples Major Lazer’s “Keep it Goin Louder”. The mixtape also features reimagined versions of “aNYway” by Duck Sauce, “Turn My Swag On” by Soulja Boy (featuring Telli Gramz from Ninjasonik), and “Empire State of Mind” by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys.

Cop a free download of the mixtape from RCRDLBL or stream it after the jump. The duo’s self-titled EP, released today, is available on iTunes and features full versions of “Dancin’ On Me”, “Turn My Swag On”, “Rockin’ That Thang”, “Pop Champagne”, and “Can’t Believe It”.

Telephoned will be celebrating the release of their EP tomorrow night at Ella. Check out our events page for more details and to RSVP. You can also catch the duo at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on January 30th with Cubic Zirconia and Cage. Click here for tickets.

The Lyrical Anarchy of Cage

cage-richie-adomako-2

If the Grim Reaper had to sing, he would probably sing about death. Cage, the New York-bred rapper and indie-rocker may not meet the reaper’s demise in song but gives him a run for his money in a fashion reminiscent of Charlie Daniels’ Johnny in “The Devil Went To Georgia.” In such a case, the Reaper should have been at BB King in New York City this past Friday for the “Depart From Me Round 2″ tour.  With Shinobi Ninja and Tame One setting the stage, Cage’s appearance was met by fans who were eager for his story-driven lyrical journeys. Backed by DJ Chauncey, he spewed over beats in the familiar form that garnered acclaim in the New York underground and independent hip-hop scene. With a cult status following, the audience responded to every single jagged and jilted word in his lyrics.
