More CMJ Madness: Shanghai’d and The Fort

We just got wind of a couple more parties you might want to check out this week…

Our friends at MeanRed are taking over 88 Palace this week with their Shanghai’d event series. Tonight is the Fool’s Showcase, featuring Kingdom and Sammy Bananas, with live performances by Vega and Donnis. Fool’s Gold founders A-Trak and Nick Catchdubs will be around to host the festivities. On Thursday, the Noise Problem Showcase features Designer Drugs, Lauren Flax, and NROTB; on Friday, Adam Tensta, VDRK and Free Magic are on the roster for MeanRed’s own showcase. As an added bonus, they’ll be passing around dim sum dishes throughout each night. Click here for the full line-ups and to RSVP.

If you’re looking for some daytime action on Saturday, Levi’s and The Fader have you covered. With continuous music from 2-10 PM, The Ace Hotel is the place to be on Saturday. We’re particularly looking forward to Chauffeur’s performance, which will feature Mark Ronson, Theophilus London and Sam Sparrow. Flashing Lights founders Nick Catchdubs and Jubilee will also be spinning at the event. Click here to RSVP.

Weekend Madness: Steve Aoki, Crookers, Major Lazer, Rusko, Flashing Lights, and More…

Weekend Composite

Hold on to your hats, this weekend is shaping up to be quite the party marathon, with some of the biggest DJs in the world hitting our fair city.

GBH will be kicking things off tonight with Steve Aoki, Classix and Destructo at Webster Hall. Last time Steve Aoki spun at Webster Hall, it was pure mayhem, and we’re expecting tonight to be no different. Girls & Boys residents Alex English, Kids with Snakes, Gavin Royce, and Rekles will also be in the house

Saturday brings about a tougher decision: Hard is bringing the wobble wobble to Terminal 5, with a massive dubstep line-up; Crookers, Major Lazer, Rusko, Jack Beats and Destructo are all ready to bring some bass-heavy beats to NYC.

Saturday is also the one-year anniversary of Flashing Lights, brought to you by the good folks at MeanRed. Nick Catchdubs, DJ Ayres and Jubilee’s monthly party will be back at 88 Palace, and will feature a guest DJ set by Toddlat.

Decisions, decisions… but then again, we think we can cram it all in.

Be sure to check out previous photo galleries of Steve Aoki, Classix, Major Lazer, and Flashing Lights.

Toads & Flashing Lights

I’ve attended a few parties in dodgy locations before, but finding a bit of revelry in a Chinatown mall was a first. Enter Flashing Lights: your no-nonsense solution to realizing a sublime NYC evening. Spearheaded by DJs Ayres (The Rub), Jubilee (Nightshifters), and Nick Catchdubs (Fool’s Gold), these tastemakers bring a genuine dance party to life without the pretentious attitude found in clubs across the apple.

The NYC debut of Toadally Krossed Out begged a comparison to Dim Mak’s Bloody Beetroots as the two DJs donned green toad masks while rocking the dim sum restaurant. What stood out for me was the attendance from label heads, Diplo and A-Trak, who both came out to support their artists and partake in the action. In return, the DJs played their respective remixes of tracks by Switch, A-Trak, and Major Lazer. Their presence exemplifies a certain kinship that exists amongst labels like Fool’s Gold and Mad Decent and the artists they represent. All this juicy party goodness is wrapped together with big help from MeanRed Productions and Good Peoples.

We look forward to what artists and collaborations Flashing Lights will be offering in the future. In the mean time check out the site www.flashinglightslightslights.com and be sure to catch their next party at Glasslands September 4th! Also check out some photos from the evening debauchery as well as the M.R.I. Lightpainting blog.

Warning: A Mix Tape with Neon Flashing Lights

flashing-lights-hifi-cartel-ayers-

DJ Ayres, Nick Catchdubs and Jubilee created Flashing Lights, their signature party, to fill the house, disco, techno and rave void in NYC. Their next party at 88 Palace on August 14th will also mark the debut of Mad Decent’s Toadally Krossed Out. As a teaser, the trio has put together a monstrous mix tape, Flashing Lights Vol. 4. This mix does not come with a warning but we advise you to turn up the volume and lose yourself in this eclectic compilation. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Nick Catchdubs: Catch Him If You Can

profile-nick-catchdubs-richie-adomako

Nick Catchdubs has his plate full and he wants to share it with you. His music-making journey started with a high school band. In college he designed graphics for Hollertronix and made obsessive mix tapes for graduation parties before becoming a DJ and founding a successful record label. Since realizing DJ-ing is what he wanted to do after hearing mixes from Hollertronix, Mark Ronson and others, it has been a learning experience for Nick. His budding love of music has led him to grow within circles of friends and artists. In his early years, Nick observed the likes of Cosmo Baker, DJ Ayres and others who were considerably doing things properly from a technical and programming standpoint in music. He took what he learned along with the experiences and made it his own. ‘The Catchdubs Spin’ is an inclusion of genres from dance music, hip hop, dance hall, electro, rock and more. Nick uses different styles and genre as a means of connecting to his audience. While his sound is distinct, he makes a point of making a stamp with his music in coalescence to the  audience and their experience.

As the co-founder of Fool’s Gold Records with DJ A-Trak, leaving a stamp on an audience has become a part of Nick’s music. Fool’s Gold breeds this concept with a list of artists, DJs and producers who are taste making individuals in the music industry. From exciting mix tapes to sold out shows, Fool’s Gold captures music and creates an environment where DJs can have an influence through a label that strives for sounds and artists from an independent and underground scene.  According to Nick, the Fool’s Gold product isn’t about forcing taste, it is about molding what comes naturally through the camaraderie of artists who strive to carve their own path through maintaining good relationships and releasing good music. The success of products like Kid Cudi’s “Day ‘N’ Nite” is an added bonus among their work. The idea behind the label and their music is to operate through the cultivation of a “cool project and a cool brand,” and finding ways of making money from those means.

Fool’s Gold releases are met with an eager and receptive audience to their ever-changing and evolving work. Nick is a great example of somone who loves what he does and commits to it. He continues to strive for the dynamic between the stage and the audience. While being on a stage can change how one works, Nick finds a personal level that continues to attract people to his work.

We interviewed Nick just before he left for Australia as a part of the Flashing Lights tour.
