Round Two of Club Infinity Keeps the HARD Party Going

Last Saturday, Club Infinity hit the top floor of Santos Party House for their second edition of bass-driven musical talent and merriment. Carrying on the festivities that had begun with HARD on Governor’s Island earlier that evening, heat stricken music lovers came flooding in to revel in some heavy beats and cranked up air conditioning.

Kicking off the night’s event was Brooklyn’s own Dre Skull who warmed up the dance floor, building momentum to carry the crowd into Dave Nada’s set of “Moombahton” tunes. While most dance music producers take tunes and speed them up in their sets, Moonbahton essentially takes Dutch house and screws it down to create an almost reggaeton inspired sound. While this might sound strange in words, the aural translation is anything but, as evidenced by the incredible reception from the packed dancefloor. Popular tracks like The Crystal Method’s “Block Rockin’ Beats” and A-Trak’s remix of the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s “Head Will Roll” were reworked and slowed to 110bpm, blending seamlessly in to one another to create a fluid yet eclectic set of dance music.

Hitting the decks after Dave Nada was Kingdom, bringing in more Latin and Hip-Hop inspired rhythms to his set. After he started breaking into Juke tunes at around 3am, pure madness broke out as the stage suddenly became an impromptu block party, with a crew of dancers breaking out some serious footwork and party-goers in full costume pumping their fists and busting moves. Finally, Los Angeles’ Nguzunguzu made an appearance as a surprise guest after spinning at HARD earlier that evening, taking over Santos just as the party hit it’s peak at around 4am. With this caliber line-up, special guests, and energy from the crowd, we look forward to seeing what Club Infinity will bring us next time around!

Gaslamp Killer, Nero And The Whole Flashing Lights Crew Take Over Girls & Boys At Webster Hall

This Friday, July 30th, Webster Hall will be sculpted into bass heaven with Nero and Gaslamp Killer, while our favorite NYC trio, Ayres, Catchdubs and Jubilee, bring their flashing lights rave goodness to the stage. This is one not to be missed, period.

Last time we caught the mother fucking Gaslamp Killer, he delivered an epic sermon of cosmic bass that melted our brains in Brooklyn. Vaulting hip-hop into another dimension, GLK’s eccentrically dizzy dj sets wrap riddims around your soul while his hair keeps up the tempo. Have a listen to this mixtape from last year which Flying Lotus tells us is his first glimpse into the mind of GLK.

The Gaslamp Killer – Brainfeeder Podcast [Download]

Nero brings their internally bruising drum & bass and dubstep riddims straight across the pond to damage your ear drums. Remixing eveyrone from The Streets to Beyonce, these boys are poised to bring out the bassface in everyone. Check out one of the their hugest anthems from this year…

Nero – Innocence

The Flashing Lights crew needs no introduction. Let their latest mix do all the talking…

Our local DJ hero, Nick Catchdubs, squeezed together a sublime selection of tunes for Asian Dan to create Pink Lemonade, and this mix is a gem. Telephoned: Off the Hizzy

Meet Fool’s Gold’s latest signee, Telephoned, the brainchild of Maggie Horn and Fool’s Gold DJ/producer Sammy Bananas.  The 18-track “Off The Hook” Mixtape features a new spin on many songs that we already know and (in some cases) love.

The project’s tracks are neither remixes nor covers, rather a hybrid of both. Sammy Bananas expertly morphs the original beats into infectious tunes fit for the dance floor. Paired with Maggie Horn’s vocal stylings, each song on the mixtape brings a fresh take on the original track. The reggae-tinged “Dancin’ On Me” (Featuring Jahdan Blakkamoore) samples Enur’s Calabria and has a hint of dubstep, while “Million Dollar Bill” (originally by Whitney Houston) samples Major Lazer’s “Keep it Goin Louder”. The mixtape also features reimagined versions of “aNYway” by Duck Sauce, “Turn My Swag On” by Soulja Boy (featuring Telli Gramz from Ninjasonik), and “Empire State of Mind” by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys.

Cop a free download of the mixtape from RCRDLBL or stream it after the jump. The duo’s self-titled EP, released today, is available on iTunes and features full versions of “Dancin’ On Me”, “Turn My Swag On”, “Rockin’ That Thang”, “Pop Champagne”, and “Can’t Believe It”.

Telephoned will be celebrating the release of their EP tomorrow night at Ella. Check out our events page for more details and to RSVP. You can also catch the duo at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on January 30th with Cubic Zirconia and Cage. Click here for tickets.

Weekend Madness: Holiday Edition

Last week, Fixed got the holidays started early with a DJ set by Hot Chip. The parties continue this week when our favorite NYC music families bring us plenty of reasons to celebrate the season…

Every year, Matisyahu celebrates the Festival of Lights with a whopping eight shows, each with a different opening act. This year’s festival kicked off last Thursday with Glitch Mob at Webster Hall, but you still have four opportunities to see the reggae musician in action at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. Personally, we’re planning to catch this Thursday’s show, when HiFi favorite Kid Koala will also be playing. Get your tickets here.

On Friday at Webster Hall, GBH is celebrating with Mark Ronson and Aaron LaCrate. We caught Mark Ronson with Q-Tip at Santos Party House last week, and look forward to seeing him at our favorite weekly party. A limited number of $10 tickets are still available, so act fast.

Meanwhile, at Public Assembly, the Trouble & Bass Crew will be spinning alongside Finnish producer Rico Tubbs. Click here to win tickets to what is sure to be another great party.

On Saturday, The Brothers Macklovitch, Nick Catchdubs, Max Glazer and Just Blaze will headline the Fool’s Gold and LTD Holiday Party at the Etnies Showroom. The party is free with RSVP.

Also on Saturday, Basic NYC residents Sleepy and Boo are getting in on the holiday action at the Sullivan Room with special guests Mark Farina, Nickmatic, and a tag team set by Pete Schwinge and Tonylee. Get advance tickets here.

Looks like it’s going to be a busy weekend… click through to view the fliers for this weekend’s events, and check in next week for the lowdown on New Year’s Eve in NYC.

Kid Sister: Worth the Wait

kid-sister

After a long wait – two years to be exact – Kid Sister (aka Melissa Young) has finally released her debut album. Originally titled Dream Date and set for a July 2008 release, Ultraviolet came out this week with beats and synths from Fool’s Gold Records founders A-Trak and Nick Catchdubs. With the help of XXXChange, Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso, Rusko, Herve & Sniden, Yuksek and Spank Rock, Kid Sister creates flows with lexical quirks that makes Ultraviolet an enjoyable listen. The Chicago native joined the coveted club of female rappers in 2007 with her breakthrough billboard chart single “Pro Nails”, featuring Kanye West. Kid Sister got her start while touring with Flosstradamus (her younger brother, Josh Young makes up half of the duo), when she caught the attention of A-Trak, and the rest is nothing short of bumping erotic beats and warranted dancing.

The release of Ultraviolet makes it clear that Kid Sister has grown into a persona, taking the time to harness the interests that she garnered from her collaboration with Kanye West.  Many artists take their brink and rush for the glory, but by allowing herself the time to mature, Kid Sister yielded a magnetic and fun album of polished dance tunes and charismatic lyrics.

Tonight (Wednesday, November 18), Fool’s Gold Records will celebrate the album’s release at Griffin with DJ sets by A-Trak, Nick Catchdubs, DRek Martinez and others (click here to RSVP). You can also catch her live with Flosstradamus at Webster Hall on November 27th.

Update: Click here for photos from the release party

Check out Rusko’s dubalicious remix of “Pro Nails” below, and click through for the “Right Hand Hi” music video and track list for Ultraviolet.

Halloween Revelry with Fixed & Boys Noize

With all the options on Halloween, we were very satisfied with our choice to see Boys Noize at Santos Party House. It’s no surprise that the event sold out and was packed by the time we arrived. Boys Noize and Fixed residents JDH and Dave P brought quite the party, giving us 7 hours of pure, pulsating electro.

Santos was decked out with toilet paper to celebrate the occasion, and partygoers definitely got in the spirit of Halloween with their creative costumes. Standouts included The Bloody Beetroots, The Ghostbusters, complete with a Gatekeeper and Marshmallow Man, and Alex English donning a wig as Steve Aoki.

Boys Noize took the stage at around 1 AM, and because of the time change, got to spin for four hours, instead of just three. Set highlights included a remix of Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean into an electro version of Chromeo’s “Night by Night”. In the spirit of the holiday, he also played the spoken break of “Thriller”, and “Ghostbusters” (which Dave P dropped the previous night when opening for Simian Mobile Disco).

And be sure to check out photos from the other Halloween parties in NYC:

Halloween Madness

Planning your Halloween can be quite daunting – with so many great events to choose from, where do you begin? Fear not, The HiFi Cartel is here to help you narrow down your options. We’ve already told you about Above & Beyond at Roseland Ballroom, Danny Tenaglia at Pacha and Paco Osuna at Love. Here are some of the other happenings you might want to check out:

We’ll be at the FIXED Halloween Bash at Santos Party House, where German DJ sensation Boys Noize will be gracing the speakers with his signature funky electro. Fixed’s own JDH and Dave P will also be spinning. Boys Noize recently dropped a BBC Essential Mix, which you can check out here to gear up for this weekend’s festivities.

Fool’s Gold and Trouble & Bass are teaming up for what is sure to an epic night at Europa in Brooklyn. Kingdom, XXXChange and Nick Catchdubs from Fool’s Gold will face off against the Trouble & Bass Crew, Supra 1 and 77 Klash. Make sure you RSVP for reduced admission at the door.

After passport issues forced The Very Best to cancel their CMJ appearances, they will surely redeem themselves with a live performance at the Gods and Heroes Party presented by FlavorPill and MeanRed. The party will be held at a secret Brooklyn location. Tickets are well worth the $35 price tag, considering they include an open bar all night. 100% of the proceeds will go to Charity: Water to help bring clean drinking water to a school in Ethiopia.

The Park is also hosting quite the soiree, with a line-up that’s too long to list in its entirety. Headlined by Paul Sevigny, the event will also feature music by The Chainsmokers and B-Roc. Get advance tickets here, and be sure to arrive early to capitalize on the open bar from 9:00 – 10:30 PM.

Finally, Girls & Boys residents Gavin Royce and Stephen Pandolfi (a.k.a. Kids with Snakes) will spin at Dokebi’s Fourth Annual Halloween Party in Brooklyn, which promises to be “an excellent dark and sweaty dance experience”. If you love music but are short on cash, this is a great option since there’s no cover. As an added bonus, they’ll be serving Tacos to help you keep your energy going all night long. In preparation for the revelry, be sure to check out the Futureshock Mix Tape that Gavin Royce and Stephen Pandolfi did for Nicky Digital.

Halloween can be pretty hectic, so we highly recommend that you get advance tickets where available. And if you’re looking to get the party started early, Webster Hall has you covered, with a DJ Set by Justice on Thursday (with Jackson and Disko Dali) and live performances by Simian Mobile Disco and Phenomenal Handclap Band on Friday.

Rest up – it’s going to be a long weekend.

Check out the fliers for the events after the jump…
