Second Day of BEMF Brings the Beats

The second day of the Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival took the energy from the previous day’s festivities and doubled it, with all of Williamsburg awash in the sound of beats and dancing feet. Rubble from the night before was still littering the streets as the darkness set in, the energy picked up, and New York City’s cool kids emerged from their hangovers to start the party all over again.

At the Public Assembly Loft, Tim Sweeney stepped in around midnight, spinning his signature blend of house and disco, grooving right along with his rapt audience. Jackmaster the took over to great cheers, proceeding to drop a set of serious bangers; nothing short of a greatest hits of house and techno from 2011. As Julio Bashmore’s “Battle for Middle You” came floating out from the speakers, the entire crowd sang along, as best they could to en electronic track. Scuba’s “Feel It” was also a huge hit, getting those last few people who weren’t moving to hit the dancefloor. Braille followed, proving without a doubt that he’s a DJ in his own right (although everyone loves a good Sepalcure performance).

Downstairs, Fout Tet played to a truly packed house, with people so crammed in they were spilling out from every door. Kingdom and Girl Unit went bass heavy, focusing on the lower and more dub centric spectrum of sound. Meanwhile, Thugfucker spun deep house next door, with no shortage of pretty girls pressing up toward the DJ booth. The house was still packed when the lights went on at 4am, and the bleary eyed population was evicted into the streets in search of an afterparty. BEMF, why’d you have to go? We look forward to seeing you again next year.

Photo Gallery: Hospitality at Fabric (January 7, 2011)

Last Friday, we stopped by Fabric in London where Hospitality Records thoroughly schooled us on the art of drum n bass. S.P.Y., Girl Unit, Synkro, Nu:Tone, Sampha, Stray, Roska, Danny Byrd, Emalkay and Shy FX were just some of the many sets we caught over the course of the night.

This Friday, we’ll be back at Fabric to catch sets by Benga, Scratch Perverts, Tomb Crew, Andy C, Seiji, Hackman and more. Check in with us next week for photos and a recap of both nights.

Club Inifinity Brings Girl Unit to Santos This Saturday

This Saturday, August 21, Club Infinity returns to Santos Party House for the third installment of their club night of future-minded, bass-driven dance music from around the world. Brought to you by the good folks over at MeanRed, this weekend’s party features resident DJs Kingdom and Dre Skull, as well as Prince William, Physical Therapy & $hayne, and very special guest Girl Unit.

Hailing from the far off shores of London and from Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990′s reputable Night Slugs label, Girl Unit is known for his ability to seamlessly blend deep and melodic variations of Juke, R&B, Hip-Hop instrumentals, South African House, Ballroom Grime, UK Funky, and his own unique reinterpretations of all of the above through his dynamic sets. His own productions also take in vintage, star-lit house, dramatic R&B and 808-heavy Chicago dancefloor gear, creating a product that is not only innovative and interesting, but downright impossible to resist moving to. His track IRL, described by Bok Bok as “rat alert meets Juke @ 135″, has garnered some serious well deserved hype, and we’re itching see what he comes up with next.

This is Girl Unit’s first US tour, and he will be playing a few dates on both coasts, with New York City lucky enough to be counted among them. With only one official release and a smattering of remixes and other tracks to his name, Girl Unit nonetheless displays a keen ear for sound that is completely on point, and an impressive talent and ability that you will not want to miss witnessing firsthand.

For a taste of the coming action this Saturday, check out Girl Unit’s brand new killer XLR8R Podcast below, brimming with the latest dubplates and unreleased tunes to get you pumped.

Tickets are $5 with RSVP HERE, or $10 at the door. We also have two free tickets to give away to one lucky winner, just fill out the form below to enter. Contest closes this Friday at noon. See you on the dancefloor!
