Thom Yorke and Modeselektor are long time collaborators, so it’s no surprise that the Radiohead frontman appears not once but twice on Modeselektor’s third LP, Monkeytown, due at the end of September. Just in time to close out the outdoor concert season, Virgin Mobile FreeFest 2010 will take over Merriweather Post Pavilion on September 25. In addition to the two main stages, which will feature Thievery Corporation, LCD Soundsystem, M.I.A., Matt & Kim, and others, the festival will also include a “Dance Forest” soundtracked by Chromeo, Sleigh Bells, Neon Indian, Modeselektor and Die Antwoord. As if that weren’t enough, Trombone Shorty (featured on HBO’s Treme) will lead a second line march from stage to stage, a unique tradition from his hometown of New Orleans.
Not only is the line-up out-of-this-world awesome, the show is also free. Yes, free. So start buttering up your friends with cars because this mini-festival is worth the trip.
Tickets go “on free” Saturday, July 24 at 10 AM on Ticketfly, who is waiving all service fees for the occasion. If you miss out on the free tickets, Virgin Mobile is offering up a limited set of premium tickets, which gives access to pavilion seating. As an added bonus, Rusko has produced a mini mix featuring many of the artists on the line-up, which is available for $5. Proceeds from premium ticket sales and the mini mix will be donated to charities supporting homeless youth.
Nothing forecasts a great night better than a well chosen opening act. The party was well under way when we arrived at the Music Hall of Williamsburg, where MartyParty (of PANTyRAiD) was on the decks delivering a grimy (in a good way) dubstep DJ set. With an energy that the crowd certainly picked up on, Marty dropped tracks like “When I Look At You” by Emalkay and a fantastic dubstep remix of “Infinity” by The xx. He also threw in dubby version of TI’s “What You Know”, illustrating just how well the two genres go together.
Modeselektor took the stage at around 11:20, and opened with “Happy Birthday”. The next hour and a half was a high-energy dance party that had audience members scrambling onto the stage to get in on the action. At one point, Sebastian Szary made his way to the front of the stage to bathe the audience in champagne before taking a swig from the bottle. Highlights included “Let Your Love Grow”, “Sucker Pin”, and “2000007″. Things got interesting (to say the least) towards the end of the set with a stage show that included aliens in wheelchairs, men in gas masks and flying feathers… check out photos from the night and see for yourself.

On Friday, the Guggenheim Museum is hosting their monthly Art After Dark party, which pairs the musical stylings of Holy Ghost! with the art of Kandinsky. The party only goes from 9 PM-1 AM, so with proper planning and motivation, you can continue your night at Webster Hall, where Girls & Boys is jumping off with Jazzy Jeff and Viking . We last saw Jazzy Jeff at the Bacardi B-Live party at M2 in June, where he hit the spot with an eclectic set that included well-chosen hip-hop favorites.
If you’re more into the house scene, Sasha is heading up the bill at Blk|Market Membership’s epic 14-hour party. The Brooklyn location is kept under wraps, but you can get in on the action if you RSVP.
