Electric Zoo Artist: Richie Hawtin (Plastikman)

Spastik- Plastikman (Dubfire Rework)

Richie Hawtin’s reign as one of the world’s best DJs dates back to the year 1990. Over the last twenty years, he has won numerous awards: Greatest DJ of All Time, Best International DJ, Best Techno DJ, Best Live Act (Plastikman), Best DJ Innovator, and Best New Media Work. In the early 90’s he was an influential part of Detriot techno’s second wave of artists. By the mid-90’s, he was the leading figure of Minimal Techno and was best known for his abstract, minimal works under the alias Plastikman, a pseudonym he still uses today. Hawtin was at the forefront of incorporating laptops and digital mixing equipment into his live sets.

At the age of nine, Richie’s family moved across the pond, from England to LaSalle, Ontario (right across the river from Detroit). His father was a robotics technician and a knowledgeable fan of electronic music. Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream were often played in the Hawtin household. Richie began DJing in the Detroit clubs at the ripe age of 17 with a young palate that mixed house and techno.

With Canadian DJ John Acquaviva, he formed the label Plus 8 in 1990 to release his own tracks under the name F.U.S.E. He spent part of 2002 and 2003 living in New York City, and has since moved to Berlin, Germany. He said,

“I’d always wanted to move to Europe. I needed somewhere that was inspiring and where there were like-minded musicians and artists, somewhere you could still experiment with music and with life. Berlin is so liberal in so many different ways; there’s an amazing club scene, there’s a great development software tech scene, there are so many resources here.”

Since then, Hawtin has released music under aliases: Plastikman, F.U.S.E., Concept 1, Forcept 1, Circuit Breaker, Robotman, Chrome, Spark, Xenon, R.H.X., Jack Master, Richard Michaels, and UP!.

In 2010, Hawtin decided to bring Plastikman back into the public.

“I’ve watched a lot of live electronic shows recently and was really uninspired. Like any genre, techno has become quite commercial now that it’s got so huge. I felt it needed something heavier, darker and more intense [so I resurrected Plastikman].”

Though many of Plastikman’s tunes are 15+ years old, there is still a timelessness to them. Spastik and Helikopter still sound far ahead of today’s mire of minimal techno.

“I think I occupy this weird position between being popular and underground,” Richie continues. “I didn’t want this to be just some underground thing because what I want to achieve needs to work on a larger scale. This is why I’ve had a so called “schizophrenic year”. I’ve been alternating between the two personae of Plastikman and DJing as Richie Hawtin.”

Richie Hawtin has gone on step further to enhance his live set by created a new (free) iPhone/iPod app called SYNK. This is an experiment in audience-performer interaction, blurring the lines of perception and participation. SYNK users will participate in an experiment in audience-performer interaction aiming to blur the lines of perception and participation. They will connect to the PLASTIKMAN Wi-Fi network available at each show, and after being notified by a vibration triggered by certain moments in the performance, be able to contribute and interact by reorganizing word samples, viewing the venue from the Plastikman perspective, and seeing the realtime programming of the drum and percussive elements and effects. Be sure to download this app before hitting the Zoo Plastikman will be playing at the Zoo on Friday and Richie Hawtin will be performing on Sunday. Get excited! And Click here for more info about the iPhone/iPod app.

David Guetta: Keeping An Eye On An Icon

2009 was a big year for David Guetta, and in 2010 we are still feeling the effects of it. In French, Guetta means to “keep an eye on, watch for.” (To the record industry, Guetta means top-ten, multi-platinum records and versatility between a DJ who is as successful in front of an audience as he is behind the scenes as a producer.) The French superstar DJ and Grammy Award winner came to New York City on February 24th for a set at Pacha that fueled a chaos-of-a-party. Pacha doesn’t open on Wednesdays, yet it was packed. If that weren’t enough, the number one house DJ (also ranked third overall world-wide by the DJ List) arrived with friends in tow – sending the already excited crowd into a frenzy. Between collaborations with Akon, Kelly Rowland, Estelle and will.i.am. and hits from his 2009 album One Love, the creator of the “Fuck Me I’m Famous” moniker and tour has taken on an icon status.

The Lyrical Anarchy of Cage

cage-richie-adomako-2

If the Grim Reaper had to sing, he would probably sing about death. Cage, the New York-bred rapper and indie-rocker may not meet the reaper’s demise in song but gives him a run for his money in a fashion reminiscent of Charlie Daniels’ Johnny in “The Devil Went To Georgia.” In such a case, the Reaper should have been at BB King in New York City this past Friday for the “Depart From Me Round 2″ tour.  With Shinobi Ninja and Tame One setting the stage, Cage’s appearance was met by fans who were eager for his story-driven lyrical journeys. Backed by DJ Chauncey, he spewed over beats in the familiar form that garnered acclaim in the New York underground and independent hip-hop scene. With a cult status following, the audience responded to every single jagged and jilted word in his lyrics.

Paint the Town Neon: Diesel’s Flash For Fun Hits NYC

Last week, New Yorkers flocked to the Diesel store in Union Square to pick up a coveted wristband from the mysterious “Baron” for the Diesel “Flash for Fun” party. The wristbands, which promised a secret location, special guest DJ and open bar, were selling on Craigslist for upwards of $100 apiece on the day of the event.

“Flash for Fun” is also the name of Diesel’s line of glow-in-the-dark apparel, which includes jeans, t-shirts, sneakers and underwear. The line was conceived for “those who play hard day & night, 24 hours non-stop, without taking time to change in between”.

Given the theme, Club Love – the aforementioned “secret location” – was the perfect backdrop for the party. Neon decorations and party favors, including balloons, glow sticks, glow necklaces, and light-up sunglasses, adorned the club and partygoers alike, while a make-up artist was on hand to decorate guests’ faces, complete with neon false eyelashes.

Spank Rock, the special guest DJ, did a great job with his selection of electro remixes. We have to admit, we were a little disappointed that he was selected as the “special guest”, only because he’s a local act that often makes appearances in New York City, and past Diesel events have featured performances by M.I.A., N.E.R.D., Passion Pit, Hot Chip, Lykke Li and The Roots. No matter, Spank Rock kept the dance floor alive during his entire set.

Diesel has always been known for their innovative approach to fashion and their fun and creative parties, two things that they’ve once again proven go hand in hand.

Electric Zoo Festival: A Caged Facility of Housed Music

electric-zoo-hifi-cartel

Its been over a week and we still haven’t recovered from the Electric Zoo music festival. For the first electronic music festival in New York City, we would say it was a success. With a great selection of music from DJs in house and dance, The Electric Zoo proved to be more than a festival. It was an event that gathered a dance and music culture from the tri-state area, and bringing along its taste-makers from parts of the world - including New York’s own Danny Tenaglia and Roger Sanchez. With four stages, there wasn’t a moment where a stage was empty, yet the crowds were manageable and one could move about with ease. With some sun, it seemed like an oasis on a playing field for dance and music lovers – made more apparent as the night fell and draped the sun underneath the city skyline to massive lighting effects on the stages.

Packed with an audience that knew their music, the DJs met them in return with their A-game – hooking the crowd along with every notch of beat thrown their way. Roger Sanchez, the Queens native, sent the audience into a frenzy with his rendition of Fat Boy Slim’s “Right Here Right Now.”  With a remarkable set list, English DJ, Ben Watt created some excitement with his take on MGMT’s “Kids” and Kaskade’s “Move for me”. Always a crowd favorite, Steve Aoki delivered by keeping the crowd on their toes and jumping throughout his set. Like the Rockstar-DJ he is, Steve commanded from the stage and fueled the audience with a barrage of beats combined with his touch of sound effects – all while making use of the great sound system in place by playing with the channels. With a vocal break in his hard set to The Bloody Beetroot’s “Warp”, Steve hopped on his table, and with extremity, screamed in tune with the track.

Armin Van Buuren: Free Show on Saturday

arminvanbuuren-hificartel-electriczoo

If you missed the Electric Zoo Festival last weekend, here’s your shot at redemption: Armin van Buuren will be spinning a free show on Saturday at Governor’s Island from 1-5 PM.

Armin’s show is part of the New Island Festival, which will be taking over Governor’s Island from September 10-12 and again from September 17-20. The festival celebrates the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s voyage from Amsterdam to New York, and will include DJ sets, theater, visual arts and more, all by Dutch artists.

While the party is free, you need to purchase a Water Taxi ticket to get there. Roundtrip tickets are $10 – a bargain considering tickets were over $50 for his April show at Roseland Ballroom. Click here for more information about the event or to purchase Water Taxi tickets in advance.

Check out photos of Armin van Buuren and other performers from The Electric Zoo festival this past weekend.
