Win Tickets to No Escape from New York with Trouble & Bass

Next Wednesday, Trouble & Bass is bringing us the first “No Escape From New York” of the new year. The celebrated monthly party is moving to The Studio at Webster Hall to accommodate No Escape’s growing audience and an impressive roster of hard-hitting acts.

Each month at No Escape, the Trouble & Bass crew, headed by The Captain, Drop the Lime, AC Slater and Star Eyes, will continue to spread their signature “heavy bass” style while bringing us noteworthy local and global acts.

The first event is staying true to its name with Brooklyn-based artists Uproot Andy and Ninjasonik. Originally from Columbia, Andy Gillis (aka Uproot Andy) blends his signature cumbia beats with electro-basslines, resulting in a global style that ranges from laid back tunes to dance floor thumpers. Uproot Andy puts a refreshing spin on the style we’ve come to expect from Trouble & Bass events; and while he might seem like an unusual choice, listen below for a subtle hint of wobble-wobble in his remix of “Manuelita”, a traditional-style Columbian bullerengue song:

After seeing Ninjasonik at the Mercury Lounge last weekend, it would be difficult to capture their infectious energy in a written description. What we can tell you is that Ninjasonik is not for the faint-hearted. Led by Reverend McFly, Telli Gramz, and DJ Teenwolf, Ninjasonik storms the stage with a crew in tow, delivering a performance that includes both original songs and popular beats, not to mention constant crowd-surfing by band- and audience-members alike.

The HiFi Cartel is giving away two pairs of tickets to the show. Enter the contest after the jump or purchase advance tickets here.

Weekend Madness: The xx, Ninjasonik, Hercules & Love Affair and more

thexx-lpr

So much for a relaxing weekend. With everything that’s going on for New Year’s Eve, some of you might be planning to take the weekend off. For all you die-hards out there, here’s what’s on the menu for the first weekend in 2010:

On Friday, GBH and Girls & Boys are getting right back into the swing of things with a special New Year’s Day Party at Webster Hall. Andy Butler of Hercules and Love Affair will be spinning, and admission is only $1 before midnight if you RSVP.

This Saturday, The xx, one of 2009’s top breakout acts, are doing a special DJ set at Le Poisson Rouge. Given the laid-back nature of their music, we’re curious to hear what they’ll bring behind the decks. VHSorBETA will also be spinning, tickets are $5 in advance or $8 on the day of the show. Be sure to catch The xx when they tour with Hot Chip this spring. Click here for tickets and info.

Over at the Mercury Lounge, Brooklyn-based trio Ninjasonik will take the stage for one of their signature high-energy performances. DJ Cobra Krames will open. Click here to purchase tickets, which are $12.

Weekend Madness: Bassnectar, Fischerspooner, The Cool Kids, and More

This weekend is getting an early start when Dim Mak celebrates the release of Fischerspooner’s new single, “Supply & Demand”. With an open bar from 11-12 and $5 advanced tickets for the first 100 people to request an access code, there’s no excuse to miss the third installment of Dim Mak’s monthly NYC party “Cloak & Dagger“, especially when you throw in the musical stylings of Fischerspooner, Junior Sanchez, Ninjasonik and Hot Pink Delorean.

For a no-cover option on Thursday night, your best bet is to head over to “Ether” at Happy Endings where The Captain (of the Trouble & Bass Crew) will be playing a special doo-wop DJ set. We’re not exactly sure what that means, but it sounds intriguing.

If you haven’t already heard, Bassnectar is taking over Irving Plaza on Friday night, and we have the hook up on a pair of tickets and a copy of his eighth album, Cozza Frenzy. Click here to enter to win, or if you missed out, get advance tickets here. We caught Bassnectar at Street Scene in San Diego, and trust us, you do not want to miss this.

If you’re in more of a hip-hop mood, Girls & Boys is bringing The Cool Kids to Webster Hall for a special live performance. XXXChange of Spank Rock and David Berrie will also be spinning. Be sure to RSVP for $1 admission and $1 drinks before midnight.

And finally, after 5 years of radness, one party wasn’t enough of a celebration for Fixed, so on Saturday, they’re doing it all again. With a special live performance by british electronic quartet 2020 Soundsystem, JDH and Dave P are showing us just how far they can push the party.

Whew. Better get some rest… Fliers after the jump.

CMJ Day 2 Highlights

golden-silvers-hifi-cartel

Starting the evening with two local bands from Brooklyn, we made our way to Cake Shop for the experimental pop/rock of The Depreciation Guild, then Hank and Cupcakes at The Delancey. Hank and Cupcakes took electronic beats and added the nice touch of bass by Hank, drums and vocals by Cupcakes – who showed the many facets of her voice along with her versatility on the drums.

At the Bowery Ballroom, Fanfarlo (from London) played with posture – executing simple good music without any complications in their act. With six members on the acoustic guitar, bass, electric guitar, violin and exchanging places between the horns and strings – the group has a great harmony on the stage.

The catch of the night goes to The Golden Silvers from London and South East, UK. The winners of Glastonbury’s 2008 New Talent competition perform with a warmth of fervent melodies, overlaid with poetry and uplifting lyrics – perfectly fitting for the Bowery Poetry Club. With romantically enticing sounds – it would have been a sore to have missed these guys. They will perform their last scheduled show in the States at the Bowery Electric on October 24th.

At Le Poisson Rouge we took in the musical fusions of Ninjasonik. Wu-Tang had the shaolin, Ninjasonik has “Sonik Ninjas.” Now, whether that means really fast ninjas or ninjas killing with sounds as a weapon, or something completely left field, we have no idea. If one thing is for sure about these guys, they certainly know how to entertain. From crowd surfing, humping girls on the stage, chugging beers, starting mosh-pits, and admitting they love Devo and listen to Morrissey when they are sad, Ninjasonik is a mash of punk and rap infused with elements of crunk-music and pop – get it? With samples from the Lion King,  a live acoustic guitar and drums take on Major Lazer’s Hold the Line, and with lines like “we fuck girls, do drugs…” we pretty much got the idea that the unabashed, geeky and raunchy attitude of Ninjasonik can fuel any party, anywhere.  As one  may  suspect, it is probably what “Sonik” Ninjas do.

CMJ Spotlight: The Very Best

the_very_best

When French producer Radioclit met Malawian singer Esau Mwamwaya inside a London thrift shop, the two began a fusion of sound and culture which evolved into The Very Best. Their debut album Warm Heart of Africa has Radioclit layering warm afro melodies over uplifting electronic beats with the soul coming from Mwamwaya’s vocals. Although he sings in his native Chichewa, Mwamwaya communicates a passion that drips with happiness universally understood. Ezra Koenig and M.I.A. both appear on the album along with a few others you’ll have to hear for yourself.

The group first arrived on the scene in 2008 with the global success of “Esau Mwamwaya & Radioclit Are The Very Best”, a free mixtape with Mwamwaya singing over remixes of Michael Jackson (Free Willy theme), Vampire Weekend (“Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa”), Hans Zimmer (True Romance theme) and M.I.A. (“Paper Planes”). You can download the mixtape here.

Back in NYC for the second time this year, The Very Best will be performing at Le Poisson Rouge October 21st with Theophilus London & Ninjasonik as part of Green Owl’s CMJ showcase. Tickets are $12 in advanced. You can also catch a surprise set at Other Music October 22nd at noon sharp. Keep up with us as we bring you full coverage from this and other events at the CMJ Marathon.

Brace yourself for hazardous dance floor anthems well-fed on the homegrown African sounds of high-life and marabi, as well as bass-laden pop grooves from, well, all over the globe. -San Francisco Bay Guardian
