This weekend’s Essential Mix travels to Bristol’s skate park turned warehouse party, In:Motion, for a Eats Everything live session. Fresh off his latest EP for Dirtybird, Eats Everything aka Dan Pearce has quickly become the unforgettable champion of low-slung house. Boasting a handful of releases in the past year including one of the 2011 summer anthems ‘Entrance Song‘, Bristol seems to have yet another star. Expect two hours of chunky bass laden house perfect for getting your booty shaking.

Wim Plug, Mark Kneppers and Oscar De Jong are the studio core of Kraak & Smaak. Their 80′s inspired disco funk vibrations resemble a hypothetical hybrid between Curtis Mayfield and Jamiroquai. After originally bonding over a slavish devotion to vinyl and a love for classic funk records, this trio went on to record their debut album, ‘Boogie Angst’. Picked up in the UK by Radio 1 and in LA by KCRW the band quickly acquired fans, especially in the Los Angeles TV and Film community. This led to their music being used in hospital chick show Greys Anatomy that in turn spiraled to widespread use in other films and shows.
2011 is the year that Kraak & Smaak will take center stage with the release of their third studio album, ‘Electric Hustle’. The first single, ‘Dynamite’, has already become the most added electronic record at American College Radio and the band debuted their new live show at Eurosonc Festival to a rapturous response ahead of a mad summer touring.
DJ magazine IDJ describes Kraak & Smaak as a “must see live band” and New Yorkers you are in luck! The trio will be performing live tonight at DROM. Admission is FREE until midnight with RSVP. Otherwise, admission is $10. You can RSVP here. Check out their video for ‘Squeeze Me’ below. See you tonight at DROM! 85 Avenue A (between 5th and 6th streets) 21+ with ID, doors at 10 PM.
Bristol wonderkid Julio Bashmore dropped by Radio 1 for his debut BBC Essential Mix. His track “Battle for Middle You” has been taking over the airways this entire past year, and for good reason. In this new mix, elements of bass, techno & house make up an incredible two hour journey through sound.
Twenty three year-old Maya Jane Coles is undoubtedly one of the most talented and hardest working producers in electronic music today. She has racked up releases on Hypercolour, Defected, 20:20 Vision, and Anja Schneider‘s Mobilee label to name a few. A few days ago the UK house queen made her brillant debut on Radio 1′s Essential Mix. Listen below and check the track-list and her recent interview with Beatportal after the jump. Let’s hope she comes stateside again soon!
In Benji B’s absence, the Brainfeeder crew stopped by Flying Lotus’ LA living room for a jam session on BBC’s Radio One. Matthew David, TOKiMONSTA, Teebs and Samiyam deliver some spaced out DJ sets while FlyLo, Thudercat and Austin Peralta jam out two live impromtu sessions. If this isn’t enough to get your ears jumping, FlyLo drops two previously unreleased cuts from Warp, “Wax” and “Mcrr”. Listen below and check out the full lineup and tracklist after the jump.
Dubstep and drum & bass extraordinaire James Boyle, aka Breakage, makes his Essential Mix debut. Hailing from Croyden in the UK, Breakage has been making tunes since the ripe age of eleven. His second album Foundation was recently released on Digital Soundboy, and we highly recommend picking it up. He’s also just remixed Florence & The Machine’s “Dog Days Are Over”. Listen out for tunes from Benga, Skream, Deadmau5, MJ Cole and AC Slater, and click through to check out Breakage’s video with Roots Manuva and to see the tracklist.
Ripping apart Radio 1 this week is Buraka Som Sistema, a Lisbon ensemble whose kuduro infused productions keep hearts pumping and asses shaking. Their debut album, Black Diamond, firmly shatters any assumptions about dance music. Built on the fundamentals of house, BSS’s tunes blend electro madness with coarse break beats and bass lines while sounding as though they pump out of a classic rave speaker. Expect classic dubstep and UK funky anthems tuned up with soca rhythms while maintaing a firm grip on the Portuguese dance climate.
The first Essential Mix of the year comes from the very talented UK duo Jas Shaw and James Ford, collectively known as Simian Mobile Disco. Emerging from the ashes of the band Simian, these two caught fire by combining the propulsive groove of techno with basic rock dynamics to create unique productions and sought after remixes. Last October, the duo tore down Webster Hall with their synths, Moogs and drum machines, remixing their own dubs on the fly. This mix changes the pace, seamlessly grooving between minimal tech, dubstep and electro. Check out the tracklist and an XLR8R walk-through of their live studio rig after the jump and be sure to catch them when they return to NYC on March 11th at Le Poisson Rouge.
Radio 1 decided to ring in 2010 with three hundred minutes of Ministry of Sound NYE madness featuring Deadmau5, Eric Prydz, Justice and break-beat maestros Plump DJs. Recorded live from the O2 Arena in London, we are sure these mixes will keep you fist pumping throughout the night.
Dubbed the “Daft Punk” of Brazil”, The Twelves bring us one of the freshest mixes to BBC Radio 1. João Miguel and Luciano Oliveira, who formed the duo in 2005, have made a huge impact on the blogosphere with a series of remixes, cover versions and original tracks. Be sure not to miss this one.
