Concert Round Up: October 2nd-8th

Sunday, October 2nd, The 37th Annual Atlantic Antic at Atlantic Avenue, Free
The Atlantic Antic is a longstanding tradition in New York City. Spanning four neighborhoods through the heart of brownstone Brooklyn, the Atlantic Antic is the largest and most celebrated street festival in New York City! With over 500 artists, craftspeople, musicians, and food merchants purveying an eclectic variety of goods and services, the Antic is the perfect place to explore everything the city has to offer! Tuesday & Wednesday, October 4th & 5th, Portishead, Hammerstein Ballroom
Portishead is a band from Bristol, UK, named after a small coastal town twelve miles west of said musical hotbed, in North Somerset. They were initially known for their use of jazz samples and some hip-hop beats along with various synth sounds and the hauntingly beautiful vocals of singer Beth Gibbons. Their current sound drops the samples in favour of a harder, more abrasive edge, but retains Gibbons’ vocals. Their tunes are legendary and hauntingly mesmerizing.  Tickets

Tuesday-Sunday, October 4th-9th, Deadmau5, Roseland Ballroom
Born and raised in Niagara Falls, Canada, Joel Zimmerman (aka “deadmau5”) has become one of the most sought-after artists on the electronic music scene in recent times. He is known for his highly entertaining live gigs, often performing wearing a large cartoon mouse head. ‘Deadmau5’, Zimmermans’ DJ name, originates from an incident where a mouse crawled into his computer and died. He then posted on an internet forum of his shenanigans, and the members began calling him TheDeadMouseGuy. ‘Dead Mouse’ was too long for an IRC login name, so he abbreviated it to “deadmau5”. Tickets

Wednesday & Thursday, October 5th & 6th, James Blake, Webster Hall & Music Hall of Williamsburg
James Blake is a producer, DJ, and live musician based out of the United Kingdom. James Blake first garnered attention through his deep and melodic dubstep productions that began to emerge in 2009. The release of his EP The Bells Sketch in March of 2010, and of CMYK a few months later, represented a maturation of his sound; a movement away from his more dubstep centered production and towards the more stripped down melody that would characterize his first full length album. Released in February of this year, the album falls safely within the realm of the electronic genre, while heavily emphasizing piano and the increased integration of vocal elements, both of which are performed by James himself. This ability has set James apart and caused him to skyrocket to such notoriety at such a young age. Unfortunately both shows are sold out, we suggest trying your luck on Craigslist!

Friday, October 7th, Mickey Avalon, Webster Hall
Mickey Avalon (real name Yeshe Perl) is a rap artist from Hollywood, California. His debut self-titled solo album was released Nov. 7, 2006 on Interscope/Shoot to Kill Records in association with MySpace Records. Avalon blends dark, lewd, and crizzled lyrical hooks with hip-hop beats. Frequent topics of Avalon’s songs are his experiences with substance abuse and prostitution, but don’t let that discourage you- he knows how to deliver an epic performance. $5 til midnight with RSVP, Advance Tickets $15

Saturday, October 8th, Ladytron, Terminal 5
What transpired in the studio as a result of that confidence and freedom enhanced the vision they achieved on Witching Hour, and in doing so, has simultaneously redefined and escaped the genre. Produced by Ladytron with assistance from Vicarious Bliss (Ed Banger Records) and Alessandro Cortini (Nine Inch Nails), VELOCIFERO fully transcends the confines of electro-pop with a fresh wave of distorted soul. Mira and Helen—whose disparate vocal styles already provide considerable depth—have evolved both as musicians and songwriters, lending provocative harmonies to songs like “Runaway” and “I’m Not Scared.” While, rhythmically, there are moments reminiscent of their old favorites Os Mutantes and the Birthday Party. Atoms for Peace Rocks Roseland

On Tuesday night, Atoms for Peace and Flying Lotus played their second consecutive sold out show in New York City’s Roseland Ballroom. Atoms for Peace is a supergroup consisting of Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, Flea from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, longtime Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich,  Beck drummer Joey Waronker, and Mauro Refosco.

The concert was almost cancelled due to an underground fire on that block, but after a two-hour delay, the show continued as planned. Flying Lotus kicked things off with a brief opening set that teased the crowd with mixes of Radiohead’s “Reckoner” and “Idioteque”. Atoms for Peace took the stage shortly after 10 PM and proceeded to play Thom Yorke’s solo effort, The Eraser, from start to finish.

After a short break, Thom Yorke emerged to perform his cover of the Miracle Legion song, ”All for the Best”, along with Radiohead’s “Fog” and “Everything in it’s Right Place”. The band returned to the stage to perform Radiohead’s “Paperbag Writer”, and three Thom Yorke solo tracks, “Judge, Jury and Executioner”, The Hallow Earth” and “Feeling Pulled Apart By Horses”.

Seeing Thom Yorke and Flea on stage together was a rare treat. The band breathed new life into the songs, adding a new dimension to the already rich sound. Atoms for Peace will close their first proper US tour with a performance at Coachella on Sunday, April 18. Get your tickets HERE.

Photo Gallery: Armin van Buuren ASOT 450 Celebration (April 2 & 3, 2010)

On Friday night, Armin van Buuren played the first of two shows at Roseland Ballroom in celebration of the 450th edition of A State of Trance (ASOT). Made Event didn’t hold back on the production, with a massive LED backdrop and a DJ booth to match. There was also a “shoutwall” where fans could record messages to be played during ASOT 450.

The crowd reciprocated Armin van Buuren’s constant jubilant energy, mimicking his movements. Armin’s stage presence is unparalleled; he was constantly jumping, clapping or moving his arms to encourage the crowd’s excitement. Highlights included “On a Good Day” by Above & Beyond, “Ashley” by Filo and Peri, and the Cosmic Gate Remix of “I See You”, the theme from Avatar. He closed the set with the Jorn van Deynhoven remix of “Never Cry Again” by Dash Berlin.

A Roseland Halloween with Fedde Le Grand and Above & Beyond

above and beyond, fedde le grand, hifi cartel, at roseland ballroom, new york city

Featuring UK superstar trance DJs Above & Beyond and the Dutch phenom Fedde Le Grand, the Halloween bash at the Roseland Ballroom was one to…wait for it… die for.  In celebration of the release of Above & Beyond’s latest compilation Anjunabeats Vol. 7 and Fedde Le Grand’s debut artist album Output, the event highlighted some world’s premier trance and progressive house, and if ever there were hollows amuck in closets or haunted houses needing much relief, Fedde Le Grande and Above & Beyond certainly know how to cure it.

Throw in a little bit of base, drums, lights,  costumes and you’ve got a temporary haven in New York City to deck the halls of Halloween. If this weren’t a monster mash in the least, then it was certainly fit for a graveyard brought to life with music. With renditions of “Put Your Hands Up for Detroit” for New York, and Prodigy’s “Breathe” over Simian’s “We Are your friends,” there were enough beats for headless horsemen to go on murderous frenzy jousts in a cemetery – yes, peculiar and sick! With beats dropping like they’re lit coal – too hot to handle with bare hands, Fedde Le Grand picks them up and sets them ablaze. This is his technique to work up the crowd – lighting them up and then igniting with a flair of beats and sounds to a technical conundrum – good DJs do this. With ease, they have the ability to take a hold of the crowd’s fate and enjoyment and play with it – swinging them like a pendulum as they go along.

Halloween Madness

Planning your Halloween can be quite daunting – with so many great events to choose from, where do you begin? Fear not, The HiFi Cartel is here to help you narrow down your options. We’ve already told you about Above & Beyond at Roseland Ballroom, Danny Tenaglia at Pacha and Paco Osuna at Love. Here are some of the other happenings you might want to check out:

We’ll be at the FIXED Halloween Bash at Santos Party House, where German DJ sensation Boys Noize will be gracing the speakers with his signature funky electro. Fixed’s own JDH and Dave P will also be spinning. Boys Noize recently dropped a BBC Essential Mix, which you can check out here to gear up for this weekend’s festivities.

Fool’s Gold and Trouble & Bass are teaming up for what is sure to an epic night at Europa in Brooklyn. Kingdom, XXXChange and Nick Catchdubs from Fool’s Gold will face off against the Trouble & Bass Crew, Supra 1 and 77 Klash. Make sure you RSVP for reduced admission at the door.

After passport issues forced The Very Best to cancel their CMJ appearances, they will surely redeem themselves with a live performance at the Gods and Heroes Party presented by FlavorPill and MeanRed. The party will be held at a secret Brooklyn location. Tickets are well worth the $35 price tag, considering they include an open bar all night. 100% of the proceeds will go to Charity: Water to help bring clean drinking water to a school in Ethiopia.

The Park is also hosting quite the soiree, with a line-up that’s too long to list in its entirety. Headlined by Paul Sevigny, the event will also feature music by The Chainsmokers and B-Roc. Get advance tickets here, and be sure to arrive early to capitalize on the open bar from 9:00 – 10:30 PM.

Finally, Girls & Boys residents Gavin Royce and Stephen Pandolfi (a.k.a. Kids with Snakes) will spin at Dokebi’s Fourth Annual Halloween Party in Brooklyn, which promises to be “an excellent dark and sweaty dance experience”. If you love music but are short on cash, this is a great option since there’s no cover. As an added bonus, they’ll be serving Tacos to help you keep your energy going all night long. In preparation for the revelry, be sure to check out the Futureshock Mix Tape that Gavin Royce and Stephen Pandolfi did for Nicky Digital.

Halloween can be pretty hectic, so we highly recommend that you get advance tickets where available. And if you’re looking to get the party started early, Webster Hall has you covered, with a DJ Set by Justice on Thursday (with Jackson and Disko Dali) and live performances by Simian Mobile Disco and Phenomenal Handclap Band on Friday.

Rest up – it’s going to be a long weekend.

Check out the fliers for the events after the jump…
