Join us for #SWAG Memorial this Monday at One Last Shag

We know #SWAG is one of the most overused hashtags in social media history. That’s why in March 2011, #SWAGFUNERAL was created, to eradicate the pandemic with a collective of artists coming together for the sole purpose of throwing an event so epic that #SWAG would cease to exist. Set in an artist loft in Williamsburg, all was well…until the cops showed up before the peak of the festivities. While #SWAGFUNERAL had abruptly ended, the damage wasn’t done, as the person who gave #SWAGFUNERAL a proper venue was given a $1500 fine. That ain’t right. Which is why after many weeks of particular planning and careful curating, #SWAGMEMORIAL is happening.

This time it will be different, as the always-welcoming people at Percussion Lab are helping out the cause by collaborating with us, by having the event at One Last Shag (formerly Sweet Revenge) in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. We’re not the only ones helping out, as the event is presented by our friends Asian Dan, Bassfaced, and The Culture Of Me. Also, Sixpoint will providing refreshments all day. Along with this being an ultimate solution to end the #SWAGDEMIC, it’s also happening (coincidentally enough) on Memorial Day, meaning the back area at One Last Shag will be open and ready for partying. There will be a Tiki Bar on-site as well as a grill for anyone who wants to grill their choice of meats (or whatever vegans consume).

Lastly, there will a bevy of amazing artists providing tunes throughout the day and into the night; along with Percussion Lab Residents Dave Q (Twisup, Dub War NYC) and Sepalcure (Hotflush), there will also be stellar DJ sets from Liondub, MeLo-X, Spectacal, BFG (from Body Language) as well as special live sets from special guests Eliot Lipp, Mux Mool, and Azealia Banks.

To help end this, we look towards any patrons to contribute $5 for entry to the event, to help out our friend to deal with his $1500 fine.

#SWAG be gone. It’s time to go out in a blaze of glory.

PS – Diddy, stop stealing OUR #swag. Thanks.

James Blake Afterpartys with HiFi Cartel, R&S Records

The UK’s newest wonder boy James Blake has been having quite a year, what with the release of his first full length album, the transition from playing DJ sets to touring with a live band, and embarkation on his first North American tour. We over at The HiFi Cartel have been following his work since the early days of his first dubstep productions, and could therefore not have been more thrilled to present, along with prestigious label R&S Records, the official afterparty for his live show at Bowery Ballroom.

HiFi Cartel residents Olliedhali and Spectacal set the stage for the night, followed by Airhead, The Chain, and James Blake himself. This event marked James Blake’s first ever DJ in the United States, and it certainly did not go unappreciated, with individuals from the crowd regularly reaching up to offer him their hand, or even climbing up behind the booth on a couple of occasions. His set was skilled and playful, representing the UK bass sound that first launched him as an artist, but also incorporating more surprising elements, such as a few R&B tracks from D’Angelo.

A huge thank you to everyone who came out, and to James Blake, Airhead, The Chain, and R&S Records.

Contest: The HiFi Cartel and R&S Records Present James Blake at Tammany Hall

Wednesday, May 11, 2011, The HiFi Cartel and R&S Records present James Blake at Tammany Hall, New York City. Following his appearance at Bowery Ballroom earlier in the evening, James Blake will be performing his first ever DJ set in the United States. In support of him will be minimal bass producer and member of Blake’s band Airhead, fellow R&S artist The Chain, and HiFi Cartel residents olliedhali and Spectacal.

R&S Records is a prestigious label that stretches between the past and present parameters of underground dance culture. The previously Belgian-based label was home to landmark releases in the early-to-mid ‘90s from artists such as Joey Beltram, Jaydee, Model 500 and the enigmatic legend that is Aphex Twin. It was only a couple of years back when R&S was rejuvenated within the confines of the UK, currently releasing material from a crop of producers that are doing what the previous generation did in many ways. Acts like Blawan, Lone and Pariah have been pushing the boundaries of bass culture in ways unimaginable, and with a crop of new releases along the way from the aforementioned artists (as well as new acts), R&S brings their unique and ubiquitous effect on dance culture to New York City for one night only.

James Blake is a producer, DJ, and live musician based out of the United Kingdom. James Blake first garnered attention through his deep and melodic dubstep productions that began to emerge in 2009. His remix of Untold’s “Stop What You’re Doing” released on Hemlock caused the blogosphere to erupt with chatter, and immediately focused the music community’s attention on his outstanding DJ sets, which were gaining notoriety in the UK and beyond. The release of his EP The Bells Sketch in March of 2010, and of CMYK a few months later, represented a maturation of his sound; a movement away from his more dubstep centered production and towards the more stripped down melody that would characterize his first full length album. Released in February of this year, the album falls safely within the realm of the electronic genre, while heavily emphasizing piano and the increased integration of vocal elements, both of which are performed by James himself. This ability to combine both the beat driven musicality of an electronic track with the emotional and sentimental weight of folk music has truly set James apart and caused him to skyrocket to such notoriety at such a young age.

A limited number of advance tickets can be purchased HERE, but hurry up, as tickets to this extremely intimate event are going fast!

The HiFi Cartel Proudly Presents sub:culture

A subculture is understood as a group of people with a culture, distinct or hidden, which differentiates them from the larger culture to which they belong. Subcultures can be distinctive because of the age, ethnicity, class, location, and/or gender of the members. For The HiFi Cartel, our subculture is that of an unwavering and impassioned dedication to music – and to sub bass. We believe in music that you can feel in your very being, music that makes you forget all about the worries of the day and the pressures of responsibility, music that makes you move without caring that anyone else is watching. We do not care about the label on your jacket, where you went to school or how much money you have in your bank account, for we serve only the rhythm, the beat, and the sub-bass frequencies which do not discriminate or pass judgment. Every subculture needs its arena, every sub-bass its system, and with that in mind, we are delighted to announce that on Thursday, September 23, 2010, The HiFi Cartel will bring you the premiere edition of sub:culture, our own celebration of musical innovation and inspiration, at Le Poisson Rouge.

Click through to learn more about the amazing artists on the roster for the evening and to preview some of their music. Advanced tickets to the event can be purchased HERE, or you can RSVP HERE for reduced admission. All RSVPs will be automatically entered to win a free pair of tickets.
