Trizzy Turnt Up: Dirty South Dance 2

After much anticipation, A-Trak has finally unleashed Dirty South Dance 2 on the interwebs. The sequel to the 2007 original flawlessly fuses hip hop vocals with dance tracks and his signature scratching, resulting in fifty minutes of pure fun. With seamless transitions and a top-notch song selection, A-Trak makes it seem like hip hop and electro were born to mingle. Our favorites? “Trizzy Turnt Up”, in which he layers Soulja Boy’s “All The Way Turnt Up” over Claude VonStroke’s “Vocal Chords”, and “Ain’t I a Joker”, which pairs Yung L.A.’s “Aint I” with Joker’s “Tron”.

A-Trak has once again enlisted Shepard Fairey to create the accompanying artwork, to be released in a deluxe pack that will include a poster, t-shirt, and hard copy of the CD. Stream or download the mixtape below, and if you can’t get enough of the dirty south, then definitely check out Southerngold – Terry Urban’s concoction that melds southern hip hop with Santigold’s eponymous debut album.

A Match Made in Pop Heaven: Terry Urban’s Lady Stardust

Lady Stardust Artwork

After getting a taste of Lady Stardust last Monday, we couldn’t wait to hear the full album when it was released on Friday. Now that it’s finally here, we can tell you that Terry Urban is back with another expert mash-up, one that does justice to the original music of both Lady Gaga and David Bowie. With the help of guest producers Apple Juice Kid, 6th Sense, Double O, and nVMe, along with vocal contributors Freebass 808, OnCue and Colby O’Donnis, Terry Urban brings a refreshing take on the phrase “old meets new”.

“Love Under Pressure”, produced by Apple Juice Kid and 6th Sense, is a great example of how well the two artists combine. While I wouldn’t dare say that the remix surpasses Bowie’s original “Under Pressure”, it does give Gaga’s “Love Game” a chiller, more sophisticated vibe. The Double O-produced “Papparazzi People” is another standout track, adds a more danceable beat to Lady Gaga’s “Papparazi” and David Bowie’s “Cat People (Putting Out the Fire)”

The mixtape also weaves a few interludes with quotes from both artists, as well as Christopher Walken’s hilarious take on “Poker Face”. Remixes of all of the songs are also included in the mixtape, which you can download for free here.

Listen to “Love Under Pressure” below, and be sure to come by the release party on Tuesday night at Le Poisson Rouge. Click here to RSVP, details after the jump.

Wild Young Heartbreaks: Mick Boogie and Terry Urban Fuse The Noisettes with Kanye West

Mixtape impresarios Mick Boogie and Terry Urban are back with their latest project, this time crossing The Noisettes with Kanye West to create Wild Young Heartbreaks. Kanye’s notorious auto-tune album couldn’t be more different from The Noisettes’ lead singer Shingai’s definitively classic vocals, but they somehow make for a harmonious combination.

Many of the artists and producers who worked on Re-Living Thing, including 6th Sense, nVMe, Apple Juice Kid and Christian Rich, were happy to contribute to the new project. Double-0 from Kidz in the Hall also put his touch on the mixtape with the track “Cheap Cops” (The Noisettes’ “Cheap Kicks” with Kanye West’s “Robocop”).

Download Wild Young Heartbreaks here, and check back soon for info about the mixtape release event.

Mick Boogie and Terry Urban Team Up for New Project

noisettes-kanye composite

Hot on the heels of Re-Living Thing, Mick Boogie is at it again, collaborating once again with Terry Urban to create The Noisettes vs. Kanye West. The project fuses vocals from The Noisettes’ latest release, Wild Young Hearts, with samples from Kanye West’s 808s and Heartbreak, playing on the common theme of “heart” in the titles. The Noisettes’ old-fashioned vocals paired with Kanye West’s ultra-modern vocoder makes for an interesting combination. “Upset Lockdown”, which hit the internet last week, definitely piqued our interest; the song features live drumming by Apple Juice Kid and is produced by 6th Sense.

You can catch Mick Boogie tonight when we celebrate the release of Re-Living Thing. Also, be sure to pick up The Noisettes’ Wild Young Hearts, out today.

Re-Living Thing: Mick Boogie Remixes PB&J

relivingthings-mickboogie-hificartel

Re-Living Thing, Mick Boogie’s reimagining of Peter, Bjorn and John’s most recent album, was finally unleashed on the internet this week, and we are happy to report that it was worth the wait.

On his previous mixtape, Viva La Hova, Mick Boogie collaborated with Terry Urban to create mash-ups of Coldplay’s music with Jay-Z’s rhymes. For Re-Living Thing, Mick Boogie worked closely with PB&J to select producers and rappers for each track, resulting in cool remixes layered with freshly written raps.

The concept is immediately illustrated by the opening track, “Blue Period Picasso”, where Naledge & Mickey Factz use art-themed lines to compliment PB&J’s lyrics, “The paintings surround me”. Standouts include “Stay This Way” (Big Pooh, Chaundon & Phil Nash) and “It Don’t Move Me” (Kardinal Offshall, Donnis & Henok Achido), but the whole LP is a great listen from start to finish.

This might be a premature call, but Re-Living Thing could  be my favorite mixtape of the year. It’s on-point, highly original, and definitely worth your time. Download it here, and check out “Stay This Way” below.

APW Day 3 Highlights: Coldplay

coldplay-hificartel

All Points West ended on a high note with Coldplay‘s headlining performance on Sunday night. They brought their songs to life with outstanding musicianship, a larger-than-life backdrop and tremendous stage presence from all members of the band, particularly exhibited by frontman Chris Martin.

While their hits were more than enjoyable (gigantic yellow balloons descended on the crowd during – you guessed it – “Yellow”), some of the show’s best moments were when Coldplay paid tribute to The Beastie Boys and Michael Jackson. Chris Martin played a piano solo on a side stage to accompany his amazing musical arrangement of “Fight for your Right”. Later, when the band appeared on a small stage in the middle of the crowd, Martin sang “Billie Jean” backed by the band on three acoustic guitars.

On that note, I leave you with one of my favorites: Terry Urban’s mash-up of Coldplay’s “Vida la Viva” with Lil’ Wayne’s “A Mille”… enjoy.

One Mix at a Time: An Interview with DJ Terry Urban

Terry-Urban-Hifi-Cartel

Upon discovering Terry Urban’s Southerngold, The Hifi Cartel tapped him on the shoulder for Santigold’s afterparty at Greenhouse immediately following her performance at Terminal 5.  Terry kept the crowd at Greenhouse moving well into the night by curating the soundtrack for a great party with an engaging mix of tracks and technique.

Southerngold’s release has been met with the same inception in likeness to the Grey Album. We caught up with terry with some questions to find out more about him and the mix.

Read the interview after the jump.
