SXSW Announces Initial Line-Up

sxsw09

After taking on CMJ, The Electric Zoo, Street Scene, All Points West, and the Winter Music Conference in 2009, it seems only natural to add South by Southwest to our growing itinerary for 2010.

Last year, the festival drew 12,000 participants and showcased nearly 2,000 musical acts on 88 stages. The 2009 line-up included AC Slater, Amanda Blank, Buraka Som Sistema, Deadmau5, The Golden Filter, Grizzly Bear, Ben Harper & Relentless7, Jack Beats, MSTRKRFT and The Twelves, among others.

Now in its 24th year, the annual SXSW Music Conference and Festival will be held in Austin from March 17-21. The initial line-up of 450+ artists is likely to quadruple by March, and already includes Treasure Fingers, Kidz in the Hall, HEARTSREVOLUTION, Team Facelift, Adam Tensta and The Postelles. Chauffeur is also rumored to make a rare appearance at the festival, but is yet to be confirmed.

Music badges cost $675 if you register by January 12, and will allow you to participate in all of the official SXSW music parties, panels, and courses. Click here for a full list of badge levels, rates and details about the programs that the badges include. While the price tag might seem a little steep, it includes five full days of music with nearly 2,000 acts (which, if you do the math, breaks down to less than five cents per artist).

Don’t forget, the Winter Music Conference kicks off the following week in Miami (March 23-27), so plan accordingly. But more on that later…

Having heard of less than 10% of the CMJ line-up, Day 1 was an evening of new discoveries and a lesson in efficiency. The HiFi Cartel convened at the brand-new Limewire space in SoHo for the CMJ Media Meet & Greet before going our seperate ways to cover as many artists as possible. Check out some highlights after the jump.

“Up Close and Personal” with the Golden Filter

We’ve got our tickets and we are on board the Golden Filter train. Since catching the group at the Tribeca Grand, we could only marvel at their secrecy – any information we learned only led to more questions. Between touring and working on a new album, we caught up with Penelope (the lead singer) and Stephen (the simultaneous drummer and keys player) for a Q&A. Their first release “Solid Gold” made a splash on the web, garnering the group some worldwide attention. With “Thunderbird,” their long-awaited single, we can only wonder what they have in store for their upcoming album – set for release early 2010. Click through for the interview and teaser.

Golden Filter Makes ‘Solid Gold’ Music

the-golden-filter-feature

Golden Filter’s rare appearance and performance at the Tribeca Grand on Saturday was nothing short of ‘solid gold’. The group has some ‘mystery’ about them. Sadly, looking up information leaves more to be desired on what goes behind their music. Regardless, there is certainly no mystery to their music. With a 70’s melodic disco sound fused with harmony, synth, beats and drums, they have been compared to Blondie and others for their stage work and presence. Beyond that, they also make great mixes. Among them are Peter Bjorn and John, Cut Copy, Little Boots and more. From blog darlings to opening for the Presets on their North American tour this past spring, the members of Golden Filter may not use their names (not even on their own website), but the group from New York City is certainly making a name for themselves.

Silence is Golden

Electro-pop duo The Golden Filter will perform a rare NYC show at the Tribeca Grand this Saturday. Little is known about lead singer Penelope and synth programmer Stephen – they prefer to keep personal information under wraps: “Mystique is interesting to us. We adore secrets… we just let people listen to the music, close their eyes, use their imaginations, and not worry about who or what made it”.

Curious? So are we. Listen to their remix of Cut Copy’s “Far Away” below and click here to RSVP to their free show on Saturday.
