This past weekend, Downtown Records celebrated its five year anniversary with two fantastic nights of music. The first night at Webster Hall featured The Suzan, Lissy Trullie, White Denim, Art Brut and A-Trak. The following night at Terminal 5 featured Miike Snow, Major Lazer and Santigold, with DJ sets by DJ Mehdi and So Me.

Chromeo “Grows Up” at Terminal 5

More often than not, when I see a band perform on multiple occasions they fail to live up to the magic of the first time. Last Friday at Terminal 5, Chromeo proved to be one of few anomalies as they continue to elevate their game from show to show.

This was their first New York performance since the release of Business Casual, and for the first time since I initially saw them live (in 2009 at street Scene in San Diego) they had an album’s worth of new material to add to their show. Chromeo presented a well-balanced set list, playing favorites drawn from all three albums. They hit it out of the park with the encore, which included my two favorite tracks from Business Casual, “J’ai Claqué La Porte” and “Grow Up”.

Downtown Records to Celebrate Anniversary with Two-Day Affair

One of favorite labels, Downtown Records (home to Fool’s Gold and Mad Decent, among others) is celebrating its five year anniversary next month with two awesome nights of music, right here in New York City.

On Friday, March 4th, Downtown will take over Webster Hall for the first night of festivities. We’ve always had a soft spot for Japanese quartet The Suzan, but they really blew us away last week when they opened for Chromeo at Terminal 5. If you haven’t already (and even if you have), make it a point to see this band before they head back to the motherland. The line-up also features A-Trak, Art Brut, White Denim and Lissy Trullie. Tickets available HERE.

The party continues on March 5th at Terminal 5 with Miike Snow, Major Lazer with special guest Santigold, DJ Mehdi and So Me. I think the line-up speaks for itself. As a matter of fact, it’s already sold out.

CLICK HERE to get tickets for the first night at Webster Hall, and if you’re not familiar with the entire line-up, fret not, our friends at RCRLBL have you covered with a free playlist. Check it out HERE.

Fool’s Gold “Day Off”: Free All-Day Extravaganza this Monday

Brace yourselves, because this weekend is going to be an absolute marathon. After the Electric Zoo takes over Randall’s Island on Saturday and Sunday, Fool’s Gold Records is throwing a HUGE “Day Off” party on Monday to in celebration of our nation’s lack of labor.

The event will feature a plethora of Fool’s Gold artists and friends, with live performances by Yelawolf, Pill, Donnis and The Suzan, and DJ sets by Just Blaze, Craze, Klever and Kill the Noise. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Fool’s Gold party without its founders Nick Catchdubs and A-Trak, who will also be spinning. A-Trak and his brother, Chromeo’s Dave 1, will once again join forces as The Brothers Macklovitch for a tag team set.

The party kicks off at 2 PM at the City Winery Backyard in SoHo. No need for tickets, it’s a free event.

The Summer Pool Parties Are Back in Full Force

Jelly has provided some very fond summer memories in the past, and will help NYC create a few more in the coming weeks. Beginning on July 11th with Xiu Xiu and Deerhoof, who will play Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures, the shows only get better for the next seven weeks. Delorean, Chromeo, Cut Copy, No Age, Telephoned, Memory Tapes and Murder City Devils are just a few set to jam on Brooklyn’s East River State Park every Sunday at 2. The best part? It’s all free!

Weekend Madness: Modeselektor, Basement Jaxx and More…

We hope you’ve recovered from Halloween, because this weekend is brimming with parties you don’t want to miss…

On Friday, the Guggenheim Museum is hosting their monthly Art After Dark party, which pairs the musical stylings of Holy Ghost! with the art of Kandinsky. The party only goes from 9 PM-1 AM, so with proper planning and motivation, you can continue your night at Webster Hall, where Girls & Boys is jumping off with Jazzy Jeff and Viking . We last saw Jazzy Jeff at the Bacardi B-Live party at M2 in June, where he hit the spot with an eclectic set that included well-chosen hip-hop favorites.

If you’re more into the house scene, Sasha is heading up the bill at Blk|Market Membership’s epic 14-hour party. The Brooklyn location is kept under wraps, but you can get in on the action if you RSVP.

Saturday brings about a tougher decision, with two heavy hitting european duos going head to head. Read more about Modeselektor, Basement Jaxx, and your other Saturday night options after the jump…

Fool’s Gold Celebrates Two-Year Anniversary at CMJ

On Wednesday night, Fool’s Gold Records celebrated their two-year anniversary with a CMJ Showcase at 88 Palace. MeanRed put on quite the soirée, which featured live performances by The Suzan, Trackademicks, Vega and Donnis, and DJ sets by Treasure Fingers, Kingdom, and Sammy Bananas. Founders A-Trak and Nick Catchdubs were the hosts and MCs for the night, keeping the party going and giving away t-shirts, stickers, and other Fool’s Gold goodies.

We arrived in time to see Treasure Fingers dominate the decks with his electro set. Next up, Vega took the stage for their live performance. Fortunately for us, they blew a fuse during the first song, and we got to chat with the bassist about their future endeavors. The Austin-based band will move to New York in early 2010 to work with Chromeo on their upcoming album. When Vega finally resumed their set, it was clear that this is a match made in heaven. Their funk-infused baselines and electro-synth grooves will definitely flourish under Chromeo’s guidance.

Atlanta native Donnis, the newest member of the Fool’s Gold family, delivered a high-energy performance off songs off his summer mixtape, Diary of an ATL Brave. Pill joined him on stage for a few songs, adding a dynamic element to the set.
